Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Film Gets First Trailer
July 22, 2022 by brennon
The Dungeons & Dragons franchise has had quite the rocky road when it comes to films. The D&D film of 2000 starring Jeremy Irons was very weird but it spawned two sequels, Wrath Of The Dragon God and The Book Of Vile Darkness. Could this new film, Honor Among Thieves, reverse the fortunes of D&D on the silver screen?
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves - Official Trailer
Starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, and Sophia Lillis as our merry band of adventurers, they have stolen the wrong treasure for a rather evil person. So, it's up to them to put things right.
I was a little sceptical about another D&D adaptation as it's pretty hard to nail down exactly what makes D&D what it is. I was genuinely surprised they didn't just adapt one of the adventures of Drizzt or delve into the Dragonlance stories. But, after seeing the trailer...I might be more on board than I previously thought. I chuckled along and thought they'd done a pretty neat job getting the tone right, at least in this bite-sized preview.
I like that it seems like the film is taking a more lighthearted approach to Fantasy adventuring and it certainly seems like they've thrown the full Monster Manual at the screen when it comes to the foes they'll be facing.
I guess we'll wait and see if the film can pull off its Charm Person spell...

I don’t know. Too many fan service things in the trailer plus a track from Led Zeppelin. This feels like a movie you can only enjoy if you’re deep into D&D. here is what I (a user with little to none D&D experience) have spotted
Dragon, owlbear, dragon, mimic, dragon, fighter, dragon, theif, dragon, wizard, dragon, barde, dragon, gelatinous cube and more dragons.
And I’ll bet I’ve missed a lot more that just went straight over my head.
Proof will be in the pudding but I keep my level of excitement low.
I disagree.
You dont need to know DnD at all to enjoy dragons or weird monsters. I mean thats all those are really, just weird monsters.
Now if the plotline was about some obscure bad guy from dnd history, then sure. But just using about of dnd IP monsters isnt going require dnd lore knowledge.
Feel free to disagree, I’m keeping my expectations on low. Until it’s released to the public it could go both ways.
I think they are going for a Marvel type feel, so keeping it light, rather than gritty.
yeah … that Led Zeppelin track feels cheap.
I guess they couldn’t afford to pay a real composer ?
Or they’re trying to be ‘hip’ by adding ‘anachronistic music’ ’cause that worked so well for Shrek.
(I’d argue that Shrek is the only fantasy movie that made such a soundtrack work … )
Can’t believe their using miniatures in a D&D film
A joke there for the D&D purist to saviour. The internet is yours today Sir!
Bums me out, because it just looks so “meh.”
It looks like it’s trying to say, “Looks at me! I’m Dungeons and Dragons!” rather than just telling a cool story.
Edit: Oh, cripes, I just watched it with the sound on. It’s even worse…
It feels like it wants to be a Marvel movie. No mention of what setting, but I’m guessing Forgotten Realms.
Most important question though, is Damodar in it?
Looks like it is Forgotten Realms from some of the extra videos Wizards has done on it. And yes, we need a Damodar cameo in there somewhere!
It looks fun.
It will do well as long as it does not have a social or political agenda and just make it a fun story. However, Hollywood can’t resist screwing things so perhaps the best part of the film has already been shown and the rest could be all crap.
Well this is surely interesting. fact that they are trying again after so many failures that are live action DnD movies (2nd one was okay) and that animated movie based on Dragonlance shows that they have faith on brand.
I liked the trailer. Previous D&D films sucked… so do the vast majority of fantasy films.
Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez make a good pairing for comedy. Liked the way the identified the Owlbear to the none D&D audience with a bit of humour… making Chris Pine’s bard seem dense… he should have rolled Bardic Knowledge.
When you consider that in the last 20+ years we’ve had 6 good fantasy films and they were all Peter Jackson… lets be optimistic for once.
Owlbear, so cool
I know generally D&D or fantasy movies have a bad rep because the vast majority are low budget but I have always loved them. I doubt this will be a amazing as Krull or Hawk the Slayer who does not love those films !!!.
It looks pretty decent no doubt the the typical internet and doom and gloom types will be trying to rip it to bits even before a release. However I am going to remain pretty excited about this !!
Its okay so far.
Nothing special, but no alarm bells either. Which these days is a blessing in disquise.
I didn’t know there were sequels to that D&D movie, but I think I’m glad I didn’t 😉
The trailer for this one is filled with far too many special effects / gimmicks.
90 minutes of run-time and they need to set the scene, steal a thing, start the apocalypse, find a new team & stop the bad guys from winning …
It’s more or less the same mistake that the first one had : facing powerful bosses leaves zero room for a sequel
This should have been adapted as a D&D movie :

It’s got everything D&D is … and it is silly.
This screams Guardians of the Galaxy – DnD edition. To me at least.
Watch the panel discussion from Comic-Con, that is pretty much what they were going for to reach a Broader audience.
I like the look of this, I’m glad they didn’t go grim or gritty with this, there is enough of that in other places.
As others have said, Guardians of the Galaxy DnD and I’m up for that 🙂
