Duncan Rhodes Brings Two Thin Coats Paint Range To Kickstarter
September 8, 2021 by brennon
He has done it. Alongside his partners at Trans Atlantis Games, Duncan Rhodes has achieved his final form. Once the golden scion of painting at Games Workshop, Rhodes has stepped out of their shadow, launched his YouTube channel and has now taken to Kickstarter with his very own paint range, Two Thin Coats.

No doubt to the relief of folks, the Two Tin Coats Paints are not simply a relabelled set of off-the-shelf paints by another company. Rhodes has worked with their fancy chemists and tinkerers to create a range of paints from the ground up that suit his particular style of painting.

Each of the fifty-four paints within the range has been designed to give maximum coverage, vibrancy and also (as the name would suggest) thin down well. They all come in dropper bottles and fit into groups of three.

This means for every core colour, be that red, green, yellow, blue or something else, you will have a shadow, a midtone and a highlight. This means that as a newcomer to painting or as a veteran, you can follow a three-step process to making your miniatures pop. We've seen how good this step-by-step process can work with Games Workshop so it's no surprise it is replicated here.
If you're interested in how miniatures look when painted up using Rhode's paints there is a gallery (above) and a video over on their project page showing the full process.
Kickstarter Add-Ons
As well as the options to buy a single paint, a group, or all of them, the folks behind the project are also offering up miniatures, scenic bases and more for you to snap up as well.

I like that we've already got a narrative forming behind the Two Thin Coats paint range. Sir Coates and Princess Sophia must contend with the dastardly Baron Von Evile and his thick "out of the pot" antics. There is even a fancy Battle Pug in the mix too.
The proof will be in the pudding (or pots) as is the case with all new paint ranges but it seems like they are starting from a good base level. We'll have to see if we can get our hands on some of these later on down the line and give them a shot!
Are you tempted by this new paint range from Duncan Rhodes?

Nope.
Nope indeed
A hard nope.
But I’m glad it’s extremely well funded now, so we grognards won’t be ruining anything for him. 😀
Rules about purchasing paint:
1. buy only what you need
2. when you need it.
Neither works with the Kickstarter model. Anyway for those who back this sort it things, it will be another box on the pile of pledges you will do nothing with.
I love Duncan – who doesn’t? – just not sure I can justify buying more paints! Maybe after my current lot dry up in the crazy heat up here in Newcastle they are something I will try out in the future.
Side note – always thought Duncan would be a canny bloke to get a pint with, I suspect he would get his round in no bother, but I think he would drink something embarrassing like fosters and get leery after 3 pints.
Good luck to him but the last thing I need is more paint
Nice looking Kickstarter but a little bit on the pricey side.
I will wait until or if it goes to retail. There is no benefit to buying this from KS as you will pay the same or less in retail.
Best of luck to Duncan with the range. I look forward to seeing these used and reviewed in the future but the Kickstarter is a pass for me, on the pricey side for something that you haven’t tried and the colour range isn’t as good as the likes of Vallejo for historicals which I’m mostly painting currently. That being said what’s shown in the videos appears good, so fingers crossed this is a great range, those metallics did look very smooth. I love painting using paint triads, and hopefully, this will get the younger generation of his followers into them… Read more »
Can anyone explain why the funky agitators? They’re fun little doo-hickeys, but you don’t see what they look like when you stuff them in a dropper bottle full of paint.
You will know they are cooler than just boring balls.
Who wants boring balls?
Also, would paint not gather in the little crevices and dry out?
I don’t see how it would dry out if it is the bottom of the paint bottle. There’s no air to dry it. Any sticky out bits will help stir up any sediment, if anything.
Can’t see why they would look any cooler than stainless steel ones at a fraction of the price once they’re in the bottom of the paint bottle.
I’m quite tempted actually
I woukd want to try before I buy
