Deep Rock Galactic: The Board Game Comes to Kickstarter in 2022
October 4, 2021 by fcostin
As the year has progressed, there is one thing for sure. That 2021 saw more nostalgic titles being translated over to the tabletop than ever before.
Seeing titles such as Resident Evil, Horizon Zero Dawn and Borderlands encroach on our flat surface, more and more video games are being given a new experience through the likes of board games, card games, miniatures games and role-playing games.
The newest title making its way over from XBOX and Steam is Deep Rock Galactic from Coffee Stain Studios and Ghost Ship Games, providing a 1-4 cooperative dungeon crawler board game, coming 2022 to the crowdfunding platform, Kickstarter.
Deep Rock Galactic: The Board Game
Taking armoured-up and beastly dwarves in space and taking down badass aliens in a glorious cooperative experience, Deep Rock Galactic is getting its own board game. Featuring well-loved mechanics from the video game, including classes, weapons, and the wild combat style of brutality.
The game may have been announced, but sadly this title will not be coming out to retail straight away. The game is heading up to Kickstarter to bring the game to life, hoping to duplicate the video game’s experience into some fresh life as a board game medium.
Do you enjoy tabletop/video games crossovers? I am slightly on the fence. Although I enjoy expanding on world’s which I love digitally, a lot of board games offer a similar experience but merely a new output to process. I would love to see more tabletop games expand on worlds, rather than duplicating the game for a similar experience.

Sounds like a good game.never played this one.
“Do you enjoy tabletop/video games crossovers?” No.
I play miniature wargames for the hobby of building, collecting, playing and occasional painting. Also to socialize with others over it.
I play video games to be for myself and not have to think of anybody else.
Some franchises may hold a universe that is suited for a miniature game (like Fallout and Elder Scrolls) but 1:1 video game adaptations… naaaah, thanks.
Never heard of the game. Avoid kickstarters. Shipping prices have always been too much, now they are ridiculous. Not interested.
I was going to be all old and grumpy about the number of crossover games that we have board games for. However on reflection for video games I love like fallout, darkest dungeon, tainted grail, gloomhaven I do enjoy both aspects in different ways. It is difficult to get excited about Deep Rock Galactic in the same way because I have never played the game but I am sure millions have and would buy the board game. We have to be honest we buy into games like Star Wars Legion just because of the films or RPG’s like Blade Runner… Read more »
I play DRG and enjoy the dungeon crawler genre. I’m quite keen for this. DRG can be humourous. It has dwarfs in space with guns. There are lots of bugs to shoot and rocks to mine. From the announcement post on Steam the Devs have clearly spent the time finding the fun and some different mechanics to capture the feel of the original game. Sounds like something to keep an eye on to me. At least it’s not another dark fantasy dungeon crawler… Way to many of those.
This is yet another one of those games that exist and somehow manage to convince managers that there is boardgame material in it … Why would a boardgame about a subject like mining need an IP attached to it to begin with ? Then again the discussion in the XLBS about ‘weird war’ games did suggest that an IP might be the way forward for that sort of thing. I prefer games that stand on their own two feet, but I can understand that from a publishers’ point of view an edge to stand out of the crowd is needed… Read more »
