Cryptozoic Create A Crisis With New DC Deck Building Game Expansion
March 1, 2016 by dracs
It's time to once again save the DC universe from Crisis as Cryptozoic will be releasing the third Crisis Expansion set for the DC Deck Building Game tomorrow!
This set is compatible with the rest of the DC Deck Building Game sets and brings with it two new unique modes of cooperative play, new oversized character cards, including the debut of the Suicide Squad as playable characters, and, most excitingly for me, 14 impossible mode Crime Syndicate villains.
The Crime Syndicate are the dark reflection of the Justice League from another universe (because comics have a lot of those) and each member is a twisted version of our familiar heroes, such as the brutal and manipulative Owlman or the dictatorial Ultraman. They're a set of villains I rather like as it is interesting to see familiar characters in a new light.
The DC Deck Building Game was a minor favourite among my friends, what with us all being massive comic geeks. While I do feel the base game has some serious balancing issues (once a person pulls ahead, it's very difficult to catch up) it is still a fun game, and the inclusion of more elements of the DC universe, as well as new gameplay options, promise to revitalise something that can, at times, become a little stale.
Have you played Cryptozoic's take on DC? What do you think of it?

We play the PvP version quite regularly and whilst you can find you sometimes never get going, a fast start by one player can be overcome. The co-op Crisis mode tends to suffer from taking too long, usually because you get one or two crises that are a real grind to overcome. Cryptozoic are promising to speed things up with this one so I’m looking forward to seeing how it plays.
We broke out the Watchmen pack for the first time last night to find it’s a mini-version of Crisis. Super Villains are replaced by a stack of three challenges you have to sacrifice cards to do before you can defeat them. The players work together but one of them is secretly working against the others. Takes longer to play than the regular PvP but not as long as Crisis.
I’ve only played the game once. I think the cards we used were a combination of the first two core sets. We played a cooperative game which was fun, but took a little long in my opinion. We were close to victory but eventually lost on the last villain. Every time a set for the game is released I toy with the idea of buying into the game, but I own a lot of superhero themed games. – board games (Guardian Chronicles, Sentinel Tactics), – card games (Sentinels of the Multiverse, *original* VS System), – miniatures games (Batman, SuperSystem, Pulp… Read more »
The PvP version of the game takes about an hour, regardless of the number of players. We find it great for filling in space once we’ve finished something else (as happened last night after we’d finished Super Dungeon Explore).
This could be interesting.
