The Cities Of Sigmar March To War With Brand New Launch Set
July 3, 2023 by brennon
Games Workshop dropped some fun new reveals for The Mortal Realms this weekend as well as talking about an epic-sized announcement. The Cities Of Sigmar are on the march with a brand new Launch Box coming out to celebrate the Dawnbringer Crusades of Warhammer Age Of Sigmar.

A lot of these miniatures we've seen before but this is a first chance for folks to get a look at how they look when arrayed as a proper army on the tabletop. Leading the way for the Cities Of Sigmar we have the grizzled veterans known as the Freeguild Marshal & Relic Envoy.
Freeguild Marshal & Relic Envoy // Warhammer Age Of Sigmar
These warriors are at the head of the crusades that leave bastions of Order like Hammerhal and try and establish settlements out in the wilds of The Mortal Realms. The miniature for the Marshal can be assembled in a variety of ways depending on what kind of combatant you want to make. You also get those awesome Relic Envoys which are distinctly Grimdark in that they carry around the heads of dead relatives who can offer them sage advice or admonish them as they head out on their travels.
You also have a new miniature that was revealed during the stream over the weekend. Here we have the Alchemite Warforger.
Alchemite Warforger // Warhammer Age Of Sigmar
In a Mortal Realms riff on the classic Metal Wizards of The Old World, the Alchemite Warforgers are there to enhance the armour and weaponry of your soldiers on the battlefield or turn your opponent's into rusty shards. Once again, I'm loving the distinctly Grimdark vibes for this fellow and it's nice to see something a bit different when it comes to the Wizards of Humanity. The older miniatures are still using the Battle Wizards kit from Warhammer Fantasy Battles!
As well as the characters, you also get two units of the Freeguild Steelhelms who will act as your rank and file. They are shoved out of the gates of the city with a ramshackle collection of gear and now march to war under the gaze of folks like the War Priests.
You've also got the noble Freeguild Cavaliers who hark back to Empire Knightly Orders of old and bring a bit of shock and awe to the battlefield. A lot of folks have said that these miniatures have ticked a lot of boxes for them and I reckon a fair few folks are going to be picking these up.
The set also comes with a special edition version of Battletome: Cities Of Sigmar alongside Warscroll Cards for all of the units and transfer sheets for staking your claim and showing your allegiance.
New Character - Tahlia Vedra, Lioness Of The Parch!
The Cities Of Sigmar also need a new leader and that's where Tahlia Vedra, Lioness Of The Parch comes in. She might not be a Stormcast Eternal but she's a deadly foe regardless and comes on the back of a fearsome Manticore!
Tahlia Vedra, Lioness Of The Parch // Warhammer Age Of Sigmar
A former mercenary, Tahlia now leads from the front on her deadly mount, Infernadine. She is able to inspire her troops to great feats of heroism on the battlefield and can bring not one, not two but three different weapons to bear on her enemies. She can use the flaming sword Parchtongue which was won from an Archmage, the Greataxe known as Justice which she claimed from the Bloody Duke or perhaps Warmaker which came from the treasures of Venalius. She has seen a lot and lived to tell the tale!
I can't imagine even the mightiest of Stormcast Eternals wanting to try and put her in her place and this works as a suitably impressive miniature to crown a new Cities Of Sigmar army on the tabletop.
Warbands Of Warcry
One such band of hunters that might try their look when tackling that Manticore are The Monsta-Killaz, a new warband for Destruction coming to the skirmish game, Warcry.

Led by a deadly Beastnob, these Kruleboyz are excited by the prospect of hunting down the biggest and baddest prey. You've got the various Klutcha-grots which will be sneaking around trying to pilfer all manner of trophies whilst the Bawla Boys get ready to draw the attention of a monster and draw it into a trap.
You've also got Gnarlwood Howlaz who has been tamed by the Kruleboyz to fight alongside them and help with distracting the foe. The final nail in the coffin of a beast comes thanks to the Neckslicers who rush in and finish the job.
The main Beastnob in this set looks very much like the main Orruk we've seen in Realms Of Ruin, the upcoming real-time strategy game, which is neat and as a whole, this warband might get a fair few folks diving into Warcry. I know a friend who is Orcishly inclined and is very eager to snap these up.
New Skaven For Warhammer Underworlds!
Last but not least, we also got a new warband for Warhammer Underworlds and the Skaven. The Plague Monks are back and Clans Pestilens finally gets an update!

This pack of pestilent pilferers are out to try and secure more of the great plagues and poxes to satisfy The Great Horned Rat. The set comes with Skabbik himself alongside Rabidius Skench, Itchhitt, Poxlix and Rikkit. Those all sound like suitably Skaven names to me. You also get the wonderful pet rat known as Skritter who is running around hunting for warpstone and anything else they can get their grubby mitts on.
The warband is distinctly infested as you might have guessed and they come with the Befoul Keyword which staggers enemy fighters who are near them. It's pretty neat that this is a Skaven warband that wants to be up close and personal, coughing in your face.
You can read more about Skabbik's Plaguepack HERE and see whether or not they might be the warband for you.
Will you be checking out these new releases for Warhammer Age Of Sigmar, Warcry and Warhammer Underworlds?

I’m really not a fan of the new cities of sigmar aestetic, but things like that are always in teh eye of thebeholder – though I do like the Manticore!
Kruleboyz are growing on me, but it is the skaven that are the real winners. I really like the update to Clan Pestilence and hope that at some point they update the range to reflect this… they did mention in the stream they were the first models for quiet a few years, though many ranges can say the same.
i really like the Skaven, there’s almost a cartoon quality that i think reflects the silly humor, anxiety and back biting of the ratmen i loved in the old world gotrek novels. i can see this bunch getting close…then everything goes wrong. im less a fan of the new orcs or not orcs, just rubbish. afraid im not keen on the new humans either. I guess im nostalgic for the imperial look of the old world. They seem more like a mob than a unit and a speed bump for other factions.
The figures are fabulous looking to game with.
I quite like the new AoS humans… But they’re not what I was hoping for. I love the Old World Empire look, and would love to see modern miniatures designed to fit in with that range, even with the ‘high fantasy’ dial turned up a bit…
But I don’t feel that’s the right look for AoS. The new setting really deserved a redesign / retheme. Less 16th Century Central Europe and more ‘post apocalypse’. Despite quite liking the minis, the whole range seems out of place to me.
I do like the Orcs and the Skaven!
