The Chamberlain Brothers Up Next For Giants In Miniature Range
April 30, 2020 by brennon
Wargames Illustrated has previewed which two models are going to be up next for their Giants In Miniature range. This time around they're going for a Civil War snapshot and The Chamberlain Brothers.
The one particular model is based on Colonel Joshua Chamberlain alongside his brother Thomas Chamberlain, the former of which found himself immortalised in history during the Battle Of Gettysburg. It was the charge by Chamberlain and his troops on Little Round Top which defeated a Confederate advance and probably saved Major General George Gordon Meade’s Army of the Potomac.
The call of "Bayonets!" was enough to urge his men into action and despite some hesitancy, it seems like Chamberlain, whether blessed with good luck or simply good sense, was able to turn the tide.
"Spear, who would later become a brevet brigadier general, believed that all the officers at Little Round Top shared in the battle fully and honourably, but that the bayonet charge was a success largely due to the spirit of the enlisted men. He was convinced that only the tenacity of the 358 Maine men had enabled Chamberlain to defeat Oates’ two Alabama regiments."
It is certainly a very evocative moment in history and the miniatures give you an apt chance to dive in and recreate it for yourself.

Those of you who haven’t see the 1993 movie Gettysburg – you should, all 4hrs and 19mins of it. I remember my dad surprising me one day after school with the VHS – it came on 2 tapes and I loved it.
Good film, would recommend it to anyone but was disappointed with the sequel Gods and Generals. Besides the poor writing, the lack of character development and the general absence of a movie arc at times it did feel a bit like Lost Cause pornography. Glory is another good one (yeah, does have a distinct pro-Union bias but hey ho) or Battlefield of Lost Souls (Field of Lost Shoes I think was the title state-side). Love putting on films like that when I’m trying to get some painting done.
I agree % with you about Gods and Generals, the book isn’t much better as Jeff Sahara is no where near his dad as a writer, as a film it felt oddly put together and very much a lost cause celebration – overall a disappointment. I hadn’t heard of Battlefield of Lost Souls so thanks for mentioning it will go look that up. ?
Very nice looking figures.
The story of the Chamberlin brothers throughout the Civil War is an amazing story. From Fredericksburg, to Gettysburg and on to Appomattox, they played key roles. As for the figures, they’re very nice.
Absolutely – was it Joshua who commanded the Union Honour Guard at Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House? I remember he wrote about it but I can’t remember if he was a participant or an observer.
Joshua Chamberlain was specifically requested by Gen. Lee to receive his surrender because of his code of honor and his reputation as a scholar and a gentleman.
Perfect timing! Only yesterday I decided to dust off my ACW stuff, put together a couple of additional infantry battalions. Deffo need to get my hands on these.
I’m honestly blown away by these, I think the painting really helps but the models are awesome.
It makes me want to start painting a union army!!
