Punga Begin Building Their Maori Orc Fantasy Football Team
July 31, 2017 by brennon
Punga Miniatures are a new design studio that is working to bring a team of Maori inspired Orcs to the tabletop for use in your Fantasy Football games like Blood Bowl. Here is the first of their models...
This is their Blocker model, the first of a growing collection which eventually see you able to bring together a very characterful and different team on the tabletop. The folks at Punga Miniatures actually worked with the New Zealand Blood Bowl community to come up with appropriate naming and designs for their Orcs as to be as respectful as possible.
For example, the team are now known as the Toa Orcs which translates from a word for a Maori warrior as brave, a champion and a winner. They are looking to continue working closely with the community in order to really get things right.
As a big fan of rugby, it makes sense for us to start seeing some Maori getting involved in Fantasy Football, albeit as Orcs. Most of the All Blacks are built like Space Marines anyway so they deserve to get added into the mix when it comes to tabletop sports.
What do you think of their designs so far?

That is one beefy looking black orc.
Two new orcs are almost ready.
About Orcs. We used orcs, because they were strong and furious players, and they were suitable for the universe.
We have already been offered to create star players based on real players from All Blacks, we are thinking of doing this in a new team of people, If these miniatures will appeal to the fans.
They look great. You might have some problems with doing figures based on real people due to image rights
It’s always good to see more Maori culture on the tabletop, and why Orcs is a dangerous choice it sounds like due diligence has been done as much as possible.
I know if I still played Blood Bowl I’d struggle with painting the tattoos, but this team is a really nice idea.
