The Boxer Rebellion Hits Wargames Atlantic In New Preview
March 11, 2020 by brennon
Wargames Atlantic has previewed an early look at one of their new Historical plastic kits for the Imperial Conquests range. Here we some very angry Chinese folk who are taking part in The Boxer Rebellion.
The Boxer Rebellion was an uprising in China which saw them fighting back against Imperialist and Christian occupiers. It was called The Boxer Rebellion by foreign powers because many of those who took part in the rebellion knew Chinese martial arts which were known as Chinese Boxing in the west. This set allows you to build a band of hardy Chinese folk who are looking to cause some mayhem.
Inside the set, you're going to get a whole bunch of head, body and weapon options which allow you to make pure Boxers (so, no Western weapons). The folks at Wargames Atlantic also said that there will be ways to build the Kansu Braves and some of the other Imperial troops from the period using Mannlicher rifles and such.
This set would be rather awesome for those looking to build up a set of rebels for the period but you could also use these miniatures for Pulp games and plenty of other genres too. I could see these being a great basis for an alternative human force in a Fantasy game for example.
I would imagine that you're going to be getting all manner of options in this set, much like with a lot of Wargames Atlantics other plastic kits. You can also safely assume we're going to see forty models in the kit allowing you to really go to town when it comes to your rebellion!
It's worth reading up more on The Boxer Rebellion to see who the other forces were as it included a fair chunk of Europe!
Are you tempted by this new plastic set and what rules would you to compliment them?

They may be good for WWII Chinese fighters battling the Japanese invaders?
Maybe the unfortunate citizenry that gets massacred, but probably not, might work in the early back and beyond war as partisans. Tech and culture really changed at the turn of the Century, particularly in the post WW1 era. They would make good WuShu fantasy fighters and Pulp/steampunk Tong thugs though.
The fists of righteous harmony…they thought that they also had magic powers to deflect western technology (read bullets), they were wrong.
Another winner from Wargames Atlantic. They are starting to dominate the must buy list.
Agreed they’ve got some cracking sets
Great for my colonial games, Men Who Would Be Kings for example. Depending on some of the options available could possibly try doing Vietnam/Indo-Chinese against French Marines be cool…
On Facebook they were saying there is a set in the pipeline that they’ve never mentioned
The boxer rebellion was in 1900, ended 1901. Where did they get Mauser C96 from?
Looking at firearms websites they say the c96 was first manufactured in 1896
Started export to China in the 1920’s. I can’t find any earlier date. Revolvers would have been the better choice imho. I doubt even German sailors had C96, since it was never adopted by the German military and quite expensive as a civilian gun.
Box will probably only have Mannlicher M1895 rifles.
IIRC Chinese warlords and criminals would petition local craftsmen to manufacture replicas of weapons as symbols of power and wealth. Forgotten Weapons has a video on such pistols.
I’d pick this up to use them as a tong gang for a 20s pulp china town gangland game.
I’m thinking the same thing.
Very cool minis. Perfect for some Jazz age/pulp skirmish gaming
