Blade Runner II Release Date Announced
April 23, 2016 by brennon
It seems like we don't have very long to wait for a Blade Runner sequel. The second film will be in the cinema in 2017 on October 6th. Very close to my birthday so this will either be a massively awesome present or a terrible disaster...
There has been no word as to the plot of the film but it will star Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling in leading roles. A handful of other cast members have also been announced. Will it answer the question of whether or not Deckard is a Replicant?
Well, we shall see. Despite Ridley Scott's explanation I think many fans still consider it up in the air.
Will you be keeping an eye out for this one?

Ryan Gosling is a good actor but I reckon Bradley Cooper would fit that kind of role perfectly.
Ever since I read that Bradly Cooper is a huge fan of Hyperion I became a huge fan of his
If Harrison Ford is playing Decker again wouldn’t that mean he isn’t a replicant? Or do replicants age like humans?
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen this film. I can’t remember all the details.Going back on the watchlist.
I suppose there is no reason why a replicant cant age, the others had inbuilt age limits of a few years but perhaps Deckard was allowed to age naturally. They could easily explain why he is older.
Or its not the decker from the original, just a decker model replicant, lets hope he doesnt go and hide in a fridge in the rad wastes…
The jury’s still out on Deckard being a replicant. It was ambiguous in the original movie release, which was good, but was never part of the book. Philip K. Dick’s aim was to show that Deckard became less human than the replicants he was hunting. I think Ridley Scott is a git for messing with this central theme.
They better get Front Line Assembly to do the soundtrack!
Yes, that would be awesome, although id be interested in an (old school) combichrist or funker vogt soundtrack as well, probably just be charlie clouser banging pots though
I think Vangelis set the mood beautifully in the original film.
That is a movie that was needed. Needed, the movie was. A need was existing for this movie.
I am surprisingly ambivalent about this and the scarlett johanson Ghost in the Shell film, both should be getting me really excited but im not… I am MASSIVE blade runner fan, just dont see what good can come of this, only thing i can hope for is that they steal some of the plot points from the rather good point and click adventure that came out in the 90’s. Can but hope they explore more of the ecological side of things, in so much that (apart from in some deleted scenes) the fact there are virtually no animals left on… Read more »
oh god yes.
That adventure.
6 cd’s if I recall correctly.
If they wanted to do a sequel to Bladerunner that game had the story.
Except we all know that studios wouldn’t risk a sequel that didn’t include Harrison Ford despite the fact that there must be more stories worth telling that need not involve him.
@limburger thats the one, second best game westwood ever made behind dune 2: battle for arrakis
After the car crash that was Prometheus, it’s hard to get excited about Ridley Scott doing follow up films. I hope this is a return to form.
Not wanting to be pedantic but the Character name is Deckard
That being said Blade Runner was one of the key movies of my childhood. I was too young to go to see the film in the Cinema, but watched it at home, my father bought a really ropey pirate copy of the film from the guy who sold the knock off VHS tapes in a lock up on Brick Lane. Good memories – I just hope that the new film lives up to the hype that is going to precede it.
I don’t think any sequel can do the original justice. They should leave it alone.
THERE … speaks reason. How many more 80s classics must be sacrificed on the altar of Hollywood’s present-day lack of original ideas?
What, no Tom Cruise?
Dear God man, don’t give them ideas!!!
Will this be an ACTUAL sequel or a “Force Awakens sequel” i.e. the same movie with a few newly added plot holes?
I think Blade Runner is one of the greatest movies ever made. In many ways what The Force Awakens was for many here, this should be for me. I know Ridley Scott is producing rather than directing, but I assume he’ll have a big hand in the movie, and his recent output gives me no confidence this will be anything other than ponderous, pompous, and lacking in anything that made the original so great. I really hope that isn’t the case and will give it a fair shake.
I’m sure the new Blade Runner will be filled with nostalgia and references for all those nostalgia-creeps who lapped up Force Awakens and Jurassic World $$$$$$$$$$.
Ridley Scott gets some things right, and some things very, very wrong. You roll the dice with him… I think you’re probably going to end up with a Total Recall Reboot type fiasco…
Did you happen to see the making of the old Blade Runner ?
They had to use night/darkness to hide a lot of crimes …
If anything it will be next to impossible to recreate half the stuff that in the end made the movie so great.
Rutger Hauers’ final lines were improvised IIRC.
While not as good as Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, the source novel, Blade Runner is still an absolute classic of cyberpunk cinema. On current form, I doubt that Ridley Scott’s sequel will even begin to live up to the original – as noted up thread, one need look no further than the train wreck that was Prometheus to see a cause for concern. There is always the possibility that it will surprise us I suppose, though how you follow such iconic moments from the original as Rutger Hauer’s iconic ‘tears in rain’ monologue is beyond me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoAzpa1x7jU Either… Read more »
I don’t know about that. Remember the original Highlander movie? I can’t watch the original movie anymore without plugging all that wonderful mystical texture into the outrageous sci-fi context of the sequel. I will be giving this a pass on those grounds. And if it’s anything like Prometheus, well, that alone is a good enough reason to give it a miss. I suspect the original premise will be submerged in dazzling sci-fi Fast and Furious style action, to appeal to the limited attention spans of movie goers these days, and I suspect the music will follow suit. Now, if they… Read more »
I was always told the tears in the rain speech was largely Improvised. Such a short monologue, but it always stayed with me. Genuinely amazing film!
I can only hope they take a leaf out of force awakens book and stick to using models not cgi for most of it (they wont, but i can hope). That or harrision ford keeps being accident prone, takes him self out of action so he cant film it, and can stop shitting over every franchise that made him great…. Given how blade runner is pretty much the deffinition of a cult classic as it was only video sales which made it break even, the whole things smacks of attempting to bottle lightening. What we will end up with will… Read more »
Bladerunner is one of my favourite films of all time and has the perfect blend of style, great cinematography, action and an excellent and thought provoking plot.
I will therefore be avoiding the sequel like the plague as it will very likely be a total screw up like Prometheus and ruin the original for me.
and you can be sure of that , totally , 100% , nailed on screw up?
When you look at the number of good sequels vs the number of bad ones, I’d put good money on it being a screw up. It’s a story which ended just right and there was no need for a sequel.
I get totally fed up with all these sequels, prequels and remakes. please can we have more original films please?
Which ending are you referring to in which particular version if the film?
The version that ends outside Deckard’s apartment. Definitely not the ending where Deckard and Rachel fly off happily into the sunset.
It gets worse when you look at the number of good ridley scott films vs shite, his brother on paper was a better director in terms of not producing shite even if the films he made were less ambitious (top gun is a masterpeice i dont care what any one says!)
Well I will watch it as until I do I won’t know how good or bad it is. Of course it might be better than the original
I have big hopes.
Big hopes often lead to big tears. 🙁
I have serious, serious, doubts about this. It was a well written post modern piece that explored humanity and relied on intrigue and dialogue over action for most of the film. I’m concerned this sequel will be a much more straight cut action movie, without the nuance of the original. I don’t think it should even be made. Do Androids Dream (and Blade Runner) are so powerful *because* they stand alone. The ambiguity over Deckard’s humanity, and his emotional journey over the course of the story will almost certainly be undermined by a sequel. I find it very unlikely that… Read more »
I don’t understand why everyone worships Blade Runner so much. I love Ridley Scott, Harrison Ford, Phillip K. Dick and SciFi in general – but this movie has never done anything other than bore me to tears.
Hopefully a sequel can keep me awake.
You must be under 40.
I’ve never understood why people love Star Wars or 40K. You pays your money, you takes your choice.
41 in two weeks.
Maybe just not your cup of tea.
I’m 34, and I love Blade Runner. My nephew’s 16 and he loves it too. It’s not age…
Awesome! Glad people can still get into an great older movie, seems rare these days. I saw it in the theater as a 13 year old. Had no clue what to expect and was mesmerized!
Parts of the plot can drag i give you that, but the same is true of star wars, its the influence and impact its had on the genre afterwards, and even influencing wider culture. If anything it pretty much invented the cyber punk dystopian look, plausible near future tech and generally felt real. Thats why its such an amazing film to me, combined with some outstanding acting. Its influence is still very much felt today, just look at the general style of infinity terrain, you cant tell me that most people dont try and recreate the bladerunner sets in there… Read more »
Yeah, the look of it is great. Love the big corporate pyramid building.
Oh no… I hope they won’t do the same as JJ did with the new Star Wars movie. Bladerunner deserves much more…
