Warlord Games Head To The Desert With New Bolt Action Supplement & More
July 30, 2018 by brennon
If you want to get a headstart on diving into Bolt Action with us at the Boot Camp in September then you might want to head on over to the Warlord Games webstore where they have revealed the new supplement for the game, The Western Desert and much more.
The new book is the supplement that we will be focusing on in our upcoming Boot Camp which you can hear more about HERE in our recent Weekender episode. As always with a new supplement from Warlord Games, you also get yourself a special model. This time it is based on General Rommel!
Included with the book you will find new rules for a range of different units and characters as well as a full campaign run-through of the conflict in The Western Desert. Match that with a whole host of new rules for your scenarios which are all desert themed and you have a great repository of knowledge.
New Starter Sets & Terrain
As well as the new book you will also be able to pre-order some new Starter Sets for both the Germans and the British. You can either go with Afrika Korps...
...and inside this set, you will be getting:
- 36x Afrika Korps infantry (plastic)
- 1x Afrika Korps 8.8cm Flak 37 (plastic) with a seven-man crew (metal)
- 1x Afrika Korps MMG team (metal)
- 1x Afrika Korps 81mm medium mortar team (metal)
- 1x Panzer III medium tank (plastic)
- Assembly and painting instructions, stat cards, full-colour decal sheets, vehicle damage markers, and plastic bases
Or, you can decide to plump for the British (clearly the right option here) with the 8th Army.
Inside this particular set, you get...
- 36x British 8th Army infantry (plastic)
- 1x 8th Army 6-pdr anti-tank gun (metal)
- 1x 8th Army 25-pdr light artillery (metal)
- 1x 8th Army Vickers MMG team (metal)
- 1x 8th Army 3″ medium mortar team (metal)
- 2x Bren carrier (plastic) with 8th Army passengers (metal)
- Assembly and painting instructions, stat cards, full-colour decal sheets, vehicle damage markers, and plastic bases
These sets give you a good basis for beginning your adventures in Bolt Action and exploring the desert conflict in more detail. If you fancy jumping ALL the way into the mix then you also have the big Battle Set to consider.
As you can see it not only comes with the two new Starter Sets and its accompanying Campaign Book but also a whole host of extras which will enhance your battlefield experience. Terrain is always a good option for these bundles and Sarissa Precision are providing with the building you see above AND this El Alamein Railway Station Set.
So, if you want to delve into The Desert War with us this would be a good starting point. Make sure to keep an eye out for tickets for the Boot Camp appearing online soon and if you want to learn more about The Desert War then we have some great articles from our Historical Editor Oriskany that you need to check out starting HERE.
Which side will you pick?
"Which side will you pick?"
With Flames of War I went Desert rats but the contents of the DAK starter has me really tempted!
Two great set’s with the battle set looking brilliant with new scenery.
Unless I’m missing something, the infantry in both of these sets will be brand new kits. Which is exciting because of Warlord’s excellent track record with the recent plastic infantry kits (Waffen-SS, the revamped U.S. Infantry).
When you announced the Boot Camp on the Weekender I thought ‘Western desert, Yanks vs. Krauts’ but now I see Brits here… I’m a bit confused…
The Western Desert campaign was primarily British and Commonwealth forces versus Germans and Italians, as fa as I know the Americans didn’t get involved in North Africa until Operation Torch and Tunisia.
From a German point of view, these fights against the British are in the east and the fights in the west started not until Torch.
That’s where my confusion comes from.
I never saw the way to El Alamain or the way back as “The Western Desert Campaign”… because it’s in the east…
I have been looking forward to the Desert Wars sets coming out.
I was hoping they might be all new BA plastics . But I think the plastics are just the Perry sets minus the command frame . BA – 36 figures , Perry -36 figures plus 2 man command for box of 38 .
I can confirm they are brand new plastics and I can also confirm they are the best yet
@ cromwell.
I would think they would be new plastics based on what they showed at salute

Thank you for the link. They are definitely new and with loads of opportunities, allowing to build Scots, Indians, Commonwealth for the British. I wonder whether they are going to include a model with a bagpipe.
I guess I was wrong in my assumption then . Over on the Warlord site they stated they are all new and based on poses from the old Airfix OO scale sets . I love those figures, so I guess I will be getting some
I love the original OO scale DAK and eighth army figures, especially the officer running forward with his revolver drawn.
So it seems I might be doing a new bolt action army, keen to see full details of the release. We are pondering collecting for tank war as well.
This has been around for a while, any unboxing available somewhere? How playable are the battles with the kit, how much more €€€€ needs to be shoved in in order to play the scenarii?
