November 6, 2023 by brennon
The Cold War continues to heat up with more NATO Forces releases for World War 3: Team Yankee from Battlefront Miniatures. This time, it's the turn of the French who are getting themselves some nice goodies to play with in 15mm.

Leading the way, we have the French Starter Force. At the heart of this we have the three Leclerc Tanks but you've also got three AMX-30 Tanks and AMX-AUF1 Self-propelled Howitzers. These are then supported by the AMX-10P Observer and the Gazelle Helicopters.
This set also comes with all the bits and bobs that you'd need to get started in Team Yankee with an A5 Rulebook, Start Here Guide and your Unit Cards. You'd just need some dice and an opponent and way you go.
Expand Your NATO French
As well as the Starter Force, you can also get some bonus sets that you could use to expand your force. One of these is the Leclerc Tank Platoon which offers up even more of those lovely tanks!

These tanks have been refitted and rushed back to the frontlines. This is going to be your main battle tank for the French and comes with some fancy new weapon systems allowing you to combat the threat of the Soviets whether that's in Europe or over in America.
There are also some smaller sets of vehicles that, whilst not tanks, do offer you some great options for supporting your advance on the tabletop. There is the VAB T20 Fire Support Section...

...and the VBL Patrol. The VAB T20 gives you some infantry support as well as ways to keep enemy helicopters from getting too close and chancing their arm.

When it comes to the VBL Patrol, you've got some great anti-tank vehicles. These fellows come with the Eryx which allows for some short-range anti-tank guided missile action. You've also got the machine guns that allow you to watch over the tank hunters as they're getting ready to take their shots.
Moving on to the infantry, there are also some great options on that front too. You can start things off with the Infantry Platoon...

...but you can also get your hands on the 120mm Mortar Platoon and the Mistral Group. The Mortar is fairly self-explanatory as you'd expect but you've also got some "fire and forget" options with the Mistral Group.

The system was composed of a missile and its launcher with a portable and reusable tripod as a firing station. You'd still need to make sure that you were in a good space to use this but it could be great for taking out aircraft that are harassing your forces on the tabletop. A small group of infantry are also a lot harder to spot that vehicles!
If you're looking to get more of those Eyrx then you can also get the Eryx Teams for your forces as well!
Could you be tempted by the NATO French?

The AMX-30 Tanks and AMX-AUF1 kit will build either (the only difference is the turret) so you should be able to get 6 x AMX-30 out of the box if you wish.
Bad Battlefront, BAD. Quite often TY is lambasted by the historical crowd for being “wall to wall” tanks with no infantry on the table, and here we are again with Battlefront releasing yet another Starter Set with no bloody infantry in (so they are creating a rock for their own back in getting new gamers into bad habits). Not sure if this is due to the French Infantry being in metal (can’t think of a TY/FoW Starter set the HAS included metals within), but still that’s no real excuse for Battlefront on this one 🙁
For me I’d say the ideal Starter set (no matter what Nation) for TY/FoW would be two platoons of infantry, a platoon of tanks and then some APCs and some Recon vehicles. Leave the Artillery and Helicopters out of the mix (adding more rules for the new player) for now. Then not only would it be a good set for new players, but it would also make a good “army building” box for repeat purchases for gamers who already have the set.
