Learn How To Play Bolt Action With New Introductory Set
October 18, 2024 by brennon
Warlord Games, following up from the successful release of the third edition of Bolt Action, have introduced a new way for you to learn to play their 28mm World War II wargame. You can now pre-order the Bolt Action Introductory Set.
Introductory Set // Bolt Action
The Introductory Set has been designed as your first step into the World War II wargaming hobby. It teaches you the fundamentals of the game as well as how to assemble and paint your first miniatures.
How To Play Bolt Action 3rd Edition! A New Players Guide!
All of this in a neat little package with a classic match-up between the Germans and the Americans.
Field Manual // Bolt Action
The set comes with miniatures for the German Grenadiers and the US Rangers.

US Rangers // Bolt Action
These plastic miniatures will be battling out on a double-sided battle mat alongside the classic farm scenery from Warlord Games. You'll also get a box insert that doubles up as a bunker! There is even a standee to represent a Half-Track which will be rumbling forward and causing all sorts of chaos.
Introductory Set Terrain & Gaming Mat // Bolt Action
Once you've cracked everything out of the box, you will learn how to build your first miniatures, send them into action and play through a series of introductory missions which will teach you the key mechanics of Bolt Action. I think this is a great idea and should hopefully get more people interested in World War II wargaming.
The full contents of the box are...
- Full colour, 68-page book - The Bolt Action Field Manual
- 12 Plastic German Grenadiers (28mm)
- 12 Plastic US Rangers (28mm)
- Plastic Ruined Farmhouse Scenery
- Game Token Punchboard
- Double-sided Gaming Mat (30” x 22.4” approx.)
- Six Bolt Action Order Dice (3 Grey / 3 Olive Drab)
- Eight six-sided dice
- Dice Bag
- Cardboard Insert that doubles as an in-game Bunker
Nifty! Whilst I would most likely end up going for one of the bigger sets, I can see this as a manageable first step for someone wanting to play games of Bolt Action.
What do you make of the set?

That cardbox bunker is the best thing ever in the history of all wargaming since dice were invented.
As usual, some sad looking minis from Warlord, though. They really need to get better sculptors…
Nice
Why do these starter sets always include the army of the late comers to the war… aka americans?
because it sells?
Technically it’s difficult to prove, because most sets do focus on America vs Nazi Germany.
There’s also the added bonus that by that time the Germans are starting to lose battles.
Early war tends to be pretty one sided victories for the Germans, which isn’t exactly ‘fun’ (losing as ‘bad guys’ isn’t much better but it doesn’t hurt as much).
I think we need Dad’s Army the skirmish game. A few men not fit for the army hunting down the crew of a german plane shot down over England.
there’s a Dad’s army set by Warlord and one other company I think.
ooh … Imagine “Guards of Traitors’ toll”, except it’s set in London during WW 2 and the ‘guards’ are “Dad’s army”
Warlord really need to find more ways to sell that farm house, don’t they ?
It’s the one thing they really do need to replace with something a little more interesting.
It’s an awful kit, too. Terrible to put together, terrible casting, just … terrible.
I just saw the cardboard half track in the photo. Along with the cardboard bunker, these are the standout pieces in this box!
When it burns, you can burn it for real🤣🔥
The set does look interesting and I love the throw back to the paper / card elements. I do have to agree with some of the comments on the models. For some reason the problem is always the faces. They have that GW Catachan face which is from the 1980’s. The germans ones in the set are a good example of how bad they are. They have a cartoon quality that no amount of painting can fix. In 2024 you expect them to be a little better. Even battlefront faces in 15mm plastic look better than these. I think maybe… Read more »
