Gale Force Nine Reveal World Of Tanks Miniatures Game!
March 12, 2020 by brennon
With yet another announcement from Gale Force Nine, we got the news that they are coming back to the tabletop soon with the World Of Tanks Miniatures Game.
Bringing together the iconic tanks of World War II which you'll have seen in the likes of Flames Of War, Gale Force Nine have combined that with the look and feel of the very popular World Of Tanks video game in order to make a dynamic and intense clash on the tabletop for two or more players. Games are quick and easy, taking around thirty minutes or so to play and allow you to get into deadly clashes between your favourite pieces of armour.
Each of the tanks that you get in the game come pre-assembled, base coated/painted and ready to use. Each has been given a coat of paint to suit their particular look from the period and could easily be upgraded if you fancy getting stuck in and do a bit of hobby. But, you don't need to if you just want to dive in and play with some fun World War II tanks.
Each tank comes with its own statistics card which gives you a peek inside it plus you can then throw in loads of upgrades and equipment too. You can then train your crew, just like in the video game, in order to make them a band of veterans who can take on all-comers.
The roadmap for the game is also looking good as they have all manner of tanks in the mix for the future...
So, as John would no doubt say, you can never have too many tanks. The base game is coming in July 2020 and will feature the four tanks in the set. Then, you'll be able to add in a tank for each faction (Germans, Soviets, US and UK) every few months running through the rest of 2020 and into 2021.
There is plenty of goodies on the way and we are very interested to see what they have coming up gameplay-wise for this!

Is this a rebranded version of ‘Tanks’ ?
Given that Battlefront and GF9 are related that would appear to be a reasonable assumption, right ?
prepainted (or more like ‘pre primed’) is a neat idea.
Plenty of scope to make them your own while still having a them ready for a game without too much hobby.
Can I haz them now please ? 😀
I wonder how good this game stacks up large number battles.
Pffft! For shame Ben. “if you fancy a bit of hobby”. To bring up the spirit of John you must be assured that he, probably like myself if we both buy a copy, would paint that Pz. IV in the same fashion as the special edition of the same tank that was released as a promo for the anime series “Girls und Panzer”. That is, setting aside the idea of attaching each school emblem to the tanks.
“Panzer Vor!!!”
PANZER VOR!
Does anybody know what scale it’s going to be in?
15mm. These are the Battlefront Flames of War (also used for Tanks) plastic kits, pre assembled with a base colour applied.
Justin and John are probably fighting to be first in line.
Going by the cards, this is just Tanks re-skinned.
So this explains why we have had no news of releases for Tanks and Tanks Modern. If this gets some new folks in to the hobby all well and good, but it seems GF9 are letting an established game wither on the vine whilst throwing resources at this IP project.
comes with custom dice…so new rules…. maybe in time they bring out planes and ships ?
Isn’t this what Tanks was supposed to be in the first place years ago?
I wonder what they will do when they have to make the fantasy tanks found in the computer game 🙂
If it does that well that they run out of tanks and need to supplement it with “special” types then they can afford to start making them to 🙂
I stopped playing TANKS, mainly because “What a Tanker!” is superior, but also because when I was at GenCon and went to the GF9 booth and didn’t find ANY TANKS stuff.. I asked about it, and they said “GenCon isn’t a miniatures convention…” I LOLed, sold all my TANKS stuff and have not looked back… I thought MODERN might pull me back in, but nope. As much as I love WoT, I doubt it will gain any traction, in my area anyway…
Modern was not helped by the horrible balance issue with the soviet T-64 found in the starter box. GF9 release NO information about Tanks, so it appears they are happy to let the game die. Real shame as with just a bit of support it could be a great beer and pretzels game. I am thinking of switching to WaT but not sure it works well with 5 or 6 tanks per side.
For what it’s worth. Here is my opinion (feel free to ignore) TANKS! was a very good game. I seriously enjoyed it, but the thing in my opinion is that it wanted to be a board game but still have one foot in the “hobby” side of it. In today’s world of rapid/instant gratification, the hobby aspect appeals less and less to people who want to “get a game in” What GF9 is doing here is making a decision to bring the TANKS gameplay more firmly into the boardgaming genre. In tandem with wargaming.net, they are utilizing the best of… Read more »
I haven’t played Tanks for quite some time. I do like the look of this box however. I can definitely see myself grabbing it, I mean at the very least i get a few more Tanks to shove into my 15mm games worse comes to worse. Seems the perfect entry game for me.
I will stick with my own homebrew 15mm WoT rules. Was hoping to publish it, but will change the name as I expected to do anyway. Played TANKS at Salute a few years ago and it was a pretty bad game.
Will be interested to see how the ammo and equip cards work to get ideas for my own game
As much as I like my tank warfare I’m not sure if I’ll try this one. I do play World of Tanks as well as World of Warships and find both enjoyable. I think I got spoiled when I played Command Decision back in the ’90s. There’s no scale listed for the miniatures so it’s hard to know what size playing area you’ll need.
I’ve just been reading down some of your comments and I’m wondering why these companies are spending money producing molds in 15mm ( 1/56th scale if I did my math right ) when they could partner up with established model companies and produce these in 1/72 scale. Especially as there is so much variety in 1/72 scale both in WW2 and modern vehicles, not to mention available terrain, that it could and would make the gameplay that much more enjoyable.
