Firelock Games has released their free Quickstart for those wanting to have a crack at roleplaying during World War II. War Stories is a fantastic roleplaying game that uses the Year Zero system as its basis.

Allowing you to play out the period of World War II on the tabletop from a different perspective, War Stories has you taking on the role of paratroopers, tank engineers, resistance fighters, and more struggling against the Axis occupation of Europe.

Inside the Quickstart Ruleset, you will find a pretty darn comprehensive breakdown of the rules for War Stories. They use mechanics similar to those from Mutant Year Zero and Tales From The Loop but with a swing towards making things realistic and very, very deadly.

You can watch us playing through the Beta above but this new Quickstart has been refined and tweaked to iron out some of the wrinkles. The story takes place in a small village in France after you parachute behind enemy lines. As a small group of soldiers (and perhaps even a resistance fighter!) you'll be trying to find your allies whilst avoiding the attention of the German soldiers.

There are some great twists and turns in the mission that you'll play out and it really highlights the flexibility and lethality of the rules that Firelock have put together. There is, as with all of the Firelock Games range, a sense that they are walking the line of making it feel like a fun adventure whilst also making sure it's historically accurate.

It is well worth diving in and giving this one a go. We've had the chance to play through this new and updated version of the game and I still think it hits all of the right notes. I would wholeheartedly recommend diving in and playing out the one shot at the very least!
