Fields of Fire, Big Tank Battles Now Available for Download
June 29, 2014 by stvitusdancern
Proving Ground Games has announced that their Origins award winning game rules, Fields of Fire are now available to be downloaded through Wargame Vault.
For those of you who maybe unfamiliar with Fields of Fire, this is a rule set for armour battles from 1975 onwards. So, it can be played in scenarios such as the "what if" of the Fulda Gap to tank battles in Iraq.
Now personally, I have been liking the idea of finding a modern combat game set so I can play during my time in the military 1986 to 2010. The idea of those big Abrams and Challengers roaring across the fields rushing to meet some T-72s and T-80s, along with some A10 Warthogs and AH64 Apaches flying close air support to take on the Soviet onslaught makes me extremely happy!
I will be seeing some modern armour coming my way, how about you?

I’m not really a huge fan of modern warfare. My interest in history drops off sharply after 1945 (though anything before that is fascinating). Still, I’d play if someone had the rules and miniatures, and was looking for an opponent.
Uh oh . . . I might seriously have to pick this up, or at least look into it. A lot of World War II games try to “update” into the 60s, 70s, and 80s, to varying degrees of success. There are just too many changes in armor technology (not tank technology, the actual tech of the protective armor), tank ballistics, stabilized fire control systems, tank ammunition (sabot and DU rounds), and or course guided munitions. Its a case where you keep adding more and more special rules until the system literally breaks. Better to start fresh with a new… Read more »
You might want to look at Fistful of TOW’s ..it covers WW2 and modern, good set of rules
Now I need to find some modern minis to include armour and air
GHQ makes some awesome modern minis for their Microarmor line, depending of what kind of scale you need for this game.

C in C have a mice range as well

Heroics and Ros http://www.heroicsandros.co.uk/heroics/pdf/webcat.pdf are good as well depending on what your buying but also a lot cheaper than GHQ and CinC
I’ve downloaded the intro rules and breezed over a few of the salient points. The scale is listed at 1″ = 50 meters, or roughly 1-2000. This is really a good sign, as it seems to step away from the True Line of Sight rules and problems with scale you sometimes see in other minis games, games were artillery is actually on the board (?!?!), and tanks are slugging it out at several hundred feet. Sure, some “ambush” engagements happen at this range, but they are the exception, not the rule, especially in later decades when reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities… Read more »
Scotia make a lot of 1:300 stuff as do http://www.heroicsandros.co.uk/. I played a lot of this years ago, including working out how to retake Kuwait before it was retaken 🙂
