Early War Danes For WWII From Great Escape Games
April 10, 2020 by avernos
On 9th April 1940 Germany invaded Denmark as part of the plan to seize Norway and take control of the Baltic Sea and secure friendly ports to allow access to the North Sea. 80 years later, to the day, Great Escape Games have a Kickstarter campaign running to provide the niche gamer, or completionist, with 28mm figures if you want to play out the conflicts that happened in the one day war, or if you fancy some what-if games instead.
As you can see they've already got a command and a couple of squads, so a solid infantry core to build upon which for games like Bolt Action or Chain of Command is ideal. The troopers are all presented in great coats and that makes sense for April in Denmark. It seems like it was mild, but that means it was still between 0 and 7 degrees when the attack began.
The squads contain both a light machine gun and a rifle grenade launcher but with squad A having full packs and squad B without for a nice variation. It's also nice that Lloyd has made such an impact on the hobby community that Lloyd shots are now being included in the Kickstarters.
Apart from the infantry some mechanisation is available for the Danish forces, don't be expecting a lot of armour mind you. So far they have a Nimbus C motorcycle and a pillion sidecar with Light Machine Gun for it with various options unlocked through the stretch goals, including an option to have an officer being chauffeured around the battlefield.
I really like the direction they've chosen to go with the stretch goals as well. Not all of them are miniatures like the heavy machine gun that they unlocked first. As a nation that most people won't know much about in the second world war, the team at Great Escape Games have included stretch goals to help people get their Danes on the tabletop.
Already they have unlocked a PDF painting guide for them and there is an upcoming unlock that will provide the orders of battle for the forces on the 9th April, so you can be as accurate as you can if that's your thing (I know it's mine)
The next goal is a beautiful Bofors 37mm anti-tank gun, and at the rate they're knocking through their targets it will probably already be unlocked by the time you read this. I'm looking forward to the Madsen autocannon that's been mounted on the sidecar as a platform myself.
If you're into small scale skirmish actions like Bolt Action or CoC then this range gives a fantastic opportunity to game outside of the normal nations vying for control of Europe in the 1940s. If that's your thing then check out the Kickstarter here
There is nothing like a Dane...nothing in the world. There is nothing you can name that is anything like a Dane!

Great Escape games are doing sterling work releasing some of the “other” nations who fought in WW2. I have a few of their excellent Hungarians and ought to get more ??
great looking models.
This movie shows said bicycle warrior fighting German armour. The result is as expected.

Really a niche army for WW2. The fighting only lasted 6 hours although the Danish government was ready to surrender after 3 hours (it just took some time to distribute the order.
Btw I have one of those helmets at home. I can attest that it is impossible to look cool or menacing wearing it. If it had been black and you had been operating a death star it might be different though…
