Cruel Seas Unboxing: Strike Fast, Strike Hard! Starter Set
February 4, 2019 by dignity
Raise anchor and empty the chunder bucket as we prepare for seaborne dogfighting in Cruel Seas Warlord Games.
Cruel Seas is a naval tabletop miniature game in 1/300th scale where you command flotillas of small ships in battle.
The Strike Fast, Strike Hard! starter set contains everything you need for you and a friend to play including 6 x Plastic Vosper Motor Torpedo Boats, 4 x plastic E-boats, the A4 rulebook, and more tokens and markers than you can shake a Kriegsmarine at.
Have you survived the Cruel Seas?

I’m a bit disappointed that @dracs didn’t present this… he could have sailed in on one of the ships 😉 #scnr
I’m currently sailing one around the washing-up sink. Teacup off the starboard bow!
Let’s hope nobody pulls the plug in the drain then 😉
On a serious note: Since commenting on unboxing get’s one into a prize draw, are only comments on youtube valid for this or comments on BoW/OTT too? And if so, will the “double” the chances or is it one entry per video?
I do wish I knew more about this, any hope of a lets play?
I am very afraid that if I start into this That I will have the house covered in water and the destroyer cruising for a, frigate, now I am a flattop!
I’ve tried a couple of air/naval games but nothing has floated my boat (pun intended) so far. maybe this will?
Some club members just got this game, it’s pretty fun, not the most complex but a quick game can be played in 1-2 hours so you can have multiple games in a day. This would be great for a campaign system to ‘build up’ experience and other things to improve your survival rate.
This is a good fun game.
Been playing since it came out.
Small ships don’t have to worry about friendly fire from torpedoes, ships are classified by size; tiny, small, medium, large and huge. Torpedoes run underneath tiny, small and medium and only hit large or huge ships.
The numbers on the edges of the data cards are damage trackers, units on the top and tens on the bottom.
Coming from a long line of Naval men on my English side i should definitely give this game a try. “Ahoy me mateees!!”
I think there is a special rule that the game cant be played unless the British players are wearing Duffel coats and drinking copious amounts of cocoa
Need to see a lets play guys, lots of little ships on the table top.
Looks really interesting. Just picked up Blood Red Skies so might be awhile before I get round to this though.
I have played it, it’s a fun little game. There are some interesting mechanics in the game. However it does have a few issues, the torpedo rules are not particularly good for example. That said it’s a great intro game for someone wanting to get into Naval gaming, or just wants a light touch. The “Boats” in the box are: The British Vosper MTBs(the small ones) and the German Schnell boats (E-Boats as the British designated them) (the bigger ones) The Models are nice, only let down by the masts which are way too chunky. The guns are a combination… Read more »
Played 1st game on Sunday, agree with @commodorerob comments, fast play rules, torpedoe rules are a bit basic (but trying to simulate torpedoes in naval games is always awkward), gun ranges are a bit short for scale of models, in fact machine guns may not even be able fire from the stern to the bow on larger models(some of the big merchants ships and the larger destroyers). Most of the problems I’ve seen mentioned in critism of the rules are in my opinion unfounded though, most of the queries raised are on bits that are covered in the rules, though the… Read more »
It looks interesting but considering the huge errata post release and reports of some less than optimised rules in a few places, I’m waiting for a while. At least to a 2nd printing, maybe holding off until (or if) it reaches 2nd edition in a few years time. Having destroyers appear as the equivalent to a starship game’s titans might make me dip in earlier 🙂
They have already gone to press with a revised version of the rules, not sure when they will be available.
It would be nice to think they would give them away for free after the mess of the original and the rather large follow up errata
Nice to see the ships are customiseable. I assumed they would be more one size fits all in design.
In the rules you pay points for the hull/ basic ship type then points for weapons and equipment. The ship design rules actually encourage you to research the ship you want and build it WYSIWYG to the original specification.
Also Warlord will be releasing separate weapons sets to enable customisation.
Nice looking kits, maybe tempted.
To give you an idea, Tamiya do a 1:350 USS Enterprise (the post-war nuclear one) and it’s around a metre long. I’d love to see that on a tabletop game, but not on any table I own 🙂
