The Complete Starter Set is a good starting point for World War III and has been updated with all-new hard plastic kits for the US and Soviet infantry that you've seen previewed over the last few weeks. You also get everything that you need to start playing when it comes to rules and more.
World War III: The Complete Starter Set - Contents // Battlefront Miniatures
On the side of the Americans, you've got three Abrams Tanks, four Bradley Scouts, four M249 SAW Teams and three M47 Dragon Teams. On the Soviet side of things, you've got four T-80 Tanks, four BMP-3 Scouts, four AK-74 Teams and three RPG-7 Teams. This gives you a good basis for both forces and enough to start playing the game with a combined force of infantry and vehicles.
From there, you can learn to play with the Quick Start Guide, a Complete A5 Rulebook, eight Unit Cards and a big bunch of dice. A solid starter option.
World War III: Team Yankee Starter Forces
As well as the Complete Starter Set, you've also got Starter Forces for the Americans and the Soviets. The American set is a M2 Bradley Mech Combat Team.
American Starter Force // World War III: Team Yankee
These sets come with everything that you need for one nation's Starter Force. Inside this M2 Bradley Mech Combat Team, you get...
- 1x Formation Command M16 Rifle Team
- 8x M249 SAW Teams
- 6x M47 Dragon Missile Teams
- 9x M2 Bradley Armoured Fighting Vehicles
- 2x M1A1 Abrams Tanks
- 3x M270 MLRS Rocket Launchers
- 2x M163 VADS AA Vehicles
- 1x M113 FIST OP Fire Support Vehicle
- 1x Complete A5 Rule Book
- 1x American "Start Here Booklet"
- 1x Decal Sheet
- 1x Minefield Marker
So all of the miniatures you'd need alongside the rulebook. This means that if you have no interest in the Soviets then you can just focus on the Americans and get them painted up. Conversely, if you're looking at the Soviets as a force then you can get the BMP Motor Rifle Battalion.

I love the idea of Moderns, but I’m not sold on having so many tanks / vehicles on the table, it starts to look like a tank parking lot after a while.
Tempted to pick up sone models though just for painting and maybe, just maybe use them with the Grunts rules.
Its a good enough game, but Northag from PMC IMHO is a superior on, as is Cold War Commander. Lovely models though, and if you restrict the points values you can have a non-ridiculous game on a 6×4 table. Around me though the game is played predominantly by folks who think that cramming the table with a billion T62’s is somehow “kewl”…. *rolls eyes*
Yeah, Team Yankee really works better at something like 6mm so the masses of vehicles actually have room to maneuver.
The models are great. The game just looks silly on the table with lines of tanks facing off like Napoleonic armies. The rules really need a shake up, and they should have split Team Yankee in to ‘early’ and ‘late’ war rather than just tweak the points.
I have tried a few times now to watch battle reports of TY… and got board very quickly, unlike the look of say bolt action, when i watch TY all i see is blocks of tanks moving as one and have to turn off, nothing like the images in the rulebook..If somebody made a nice sexy ww3 game, i would buy the figs from BF
There is also a US Marines starter army which looks good but is a limited time only. Kind of sick of this from BF.
Battlefront makes good starters and this is one of the best to date.
Pretty much perfect for getting into Seven Days to the Rhine.
I mean, having witnessed Russia go from second most powerful military in the world to the second most powerful military in Ukraine, the whole WW III doesn’t seem to carry the same gravitas…
For me that actually makes it more appealing. I do modern pulp kind of games but the ultra realistic just isn’t for me for gaming stuff I see happening live
Personally I think this is one of the strongest starter sets done by Battlefront. Because at last they are beginning to listen to the playerbase (well the ones that don’t just play exclusively in the tourney scene) and added MOAR infantry to the starter sets. Hopefully these will form a better building block for new players, and bring back the combined arms tactics of the game (rather than the usual Tank parking lot). It’s still going to be ridiculously vehicle heavy in the written scenarios published for the books, but that’s always been the way for Battlefront games. At least… Read more »
