Mennes’ Mini-Mashup: Custom Bases With Hirst Arts (Part One)
March 23, 2017 by crew
Tomas Mennes is back with us this week showing off just what you can get up to when you're alone with your models. No, not like that!
Tomas has a huge passion for crafting and building his own bases believing that every one of them should tell a story and bring your models to life. He does this using some of the moulds from Hirst Arts.
With a weekend ahead of making your own moulds and getting your hands a little dirty you can create some amazing bases for your models to sit on...just don't get carried away. Nah, do!
Have you tried using the Hirst Arts Moulds before; if so let us know what you made and show us in the comments!
Get crafting!
Looking forward to seeing this when I get home
wow. plaster on base? really brave and you need to be master in handling models. it breaks and chipping off so easy, I personally would never use it for such big builds, its fine as 2-3 mm not 5 – 6 cm structure, pinning would not help a lot.
I know. It is pretty prone to chipping. But then again, I am not the most cautious guy when it comes to handling my models. They are meant to be gamed with anyway, so I don’t monde a bit of transport damage.
You could always use resin instead, i just never made the transition.
they look good.
As a major note, if you’re using the 30mm lipped bases, you can use a 25mm round, standard base to judge the size. This is because if you buy the base toppers, both of them use the same size…
I think resin might have been a better choice for these bases. The plaster just doesn’t have the strength needed for these small projects.
Remember this is showing off more so what you can do with Hirst Arts for your bases, not what plaster is capable of 😉
I’ve used a number of Hirst Arts molds before; they are amazing… Get “Merlin’s Magic” for your plaster and you’ll never go back. It’s a modified dental plaster made for model making, and it is just awesome. Never chips, hard as a rock, and dries in 20 minutes.
