New Other Side Starter Box + Malifaux Rules & Gen Con!
August 19, 2021 by fcostin
It is no secret that there will be a very special Starter Set arriving for The Other Side at Gen Con over at Wyrd's booth. A few weeks back, we dived into the highly-anticipated and upcoming Starter Box, looking at the incredible cohort of characters preparing for battle Breach-side.

Along with the news of the upcoming set, players were informed that they can integrate their Other Side Starter Set models as part of expanding their Guild or Resurrectionist Factions in Malifaux. As if Malifaux Burning didn't expand the crew pool enough, we now have a selection of The Other Side characters to embed into our crews too!
This week, Wyrd let us Wyrdos in on a little sneak-peek, looking at two new characters which will be contained in the coveted starter box. However, we won't be looking at how they play in The Other Side, we will be taking a look at their abilities and their chance of survival in a different arena - Malifaux.
Hanging by the edge of the Earth and by their calling for revenge, The Gwisin have followed Karai to unforeseen ends in Malifaux. Dragging their weight behind them and lurking closely behind Karai, these beings have been wrongfully returned to this life. The Court of Two has been successfully scheming in dragging these restful spirits into harm's way...
But do not feel sorry for these ghoulish spirits, The Gwisin have a dire thirst for vengeance and a lack of purpose that is morally askew. They are preparing for the hunt in Malifaux, letting their selfish desires control the wrongful purpose they have been entrapped to adhere to.
These faceless spirits may look incredibly menacing, but they are incredibly helpful to friendly models on your table. At six soulstones, whilst using the Take the Hit ability, opponents will need to reconsider when these babies are out - especially as they can take some heat off of different models in action. With the combination of Vengenace +2, that attacker will certainly feel some afterburn. Sure to bring the crew together, The Gwisin may cost a pretty penny, but the damage returned in sweet but bitter revenge pays for itself.
The Starter Box comes with three Gwisin, so there is plenty of mischief to be discovered with these bad boys.

The Gwisin are not the only restless spirits to have been punished by the Court of Two by their own entertainment. These Enslaved Spirits are tied firmly under the control of their necromancer.
The Enslaved Spirits may only have a small health limit, there is a lot that can be done on their table before they meet their Demise and scurry from the table. But not without leaving Claims of the Court in its wake - dropping a scheme marker once killed.
At three Soulstones, these spirits can prove to be quite the distraction or fodder for incoming foes, plus - there is no need to worry about any Hazardous Terrain on the board, they have you covered being unaffected by any conditions and the ability to move through other models with Incorporeal.
"The Enslaved Spirits are particularly helpful to have around in a Urami crew lead by Kirai, Envoy of the Court, as she can easily summon them onto the battlefield with her Join Us Ability."
The Other Side Starter Box // Wyrd
Whilst showing off the chaos and wreckage that the Gwisin and Enslaved Spirits can cause on the Malifaux table, Wyrd has also confirmed the contents of The Other Side Starter Box which will be making its debut and pre-release sale at GenCon 2021:
"24 Preassembled Miniatures, which includes: Sonnia Criid - Unmasked, 3 Guild Mages, 6 Gatling Gunners, Kirai Ankoku – Envoy of the Court, Ikiryo, 9 Enslaved Spirits, and 3 Gwisin, Tactics Tokens (and other tokens and Markers), 2 Fate Decks (1 Guild and 1 Court of Two), 2 TOS Measuring Tapes, The Other Side bases (and fireteam bases), Unit cards for The Other Side and stat cards for Malifaux and A Quick Start Guide to teach the basics of how to play The Other Side"
You think that was exciting? Get a load of this. Returning to The Other Side - characters who were part of the initial Kickstarter campaign - are two well-known champions - Binh Nguyen and Samantha Thrace. These characters may be returning to the fold, but they have been provided with brand new sculpts and a fresh new look coming back into the fray.
These units may be quite nasty in The Other World, but imagine how they play in Malifaux? Yes, Wyrd has indeed confirmed that these two badass champions will have Malifaux 3e stat cards in the box too and will also be available to pick up as a pre-release at Gen-Con. For more information, be sure to check out the announcement here.
It is incredibly exciting to see the worlds that Wyrd have created not just grow, but combine, evolve and integrate to become something entirely new and bigger - exciting times ahead!

fab looking new figures.
It’s good to see Other Side coming back, at least in a small way. I’ve always loved the more militaristic side of their setting.
