Take The Oath Of The Gatewatch & Unite In Battle During The MTG Prerelease
January 6, 2016 by deltagamegirl22
The release of the latest Magic The Gathering Block, Oath of the Gatewatch, is nearly upon us which can only mean one thing...Prerelease events! In addition to the usual MTG formats expected, this time Wizards of the Coast is inviting players to take the Oath of the Gatewatch with a friend and invite them to fight along side you in the Two Headed Giant format. For those of you who have not tried this format of MTG, you're missing out and there's no time like the present.
In Two Headed Giant, 4 players face off in 2 teams where they share their life total and turns of game play. Each player gets to bring a deck into the game and work cooperatively to finish off the opposing team. The cooperative element is great fun as the team shares the amount of mana available to them and you can strategically choose the order of cards to play.
Though this is all well and good, perhaps the best part about this format of Magic is reducing the fear factor for participating in a Pre-release event. What better way to get over the jitters than to take your partner in crime with you?
Will you be taking the Oath with one of your friends at the Prerelease?

They should title the Magic the Gathering movie ‘The Neverending Story’.
…oh, wait…
This set is partially designed around the idea of 2 headed giant (2HG), what with the new “surge” mechanic (spells seem to be cheaper, if they are the 2nd one cast by you or a team mate). I really would have liked to give this (i.e. the 2HG bit) a go, but unfortunately where I am, the Saturday and Sunday morning slots are the usual single player sealed affair and it’s only Sunday evening when the the 2HG is going on (I can’t justify staying out late on a Sunday night). I certainly feel as though it is a shame… Read more »
Athena Games in my local town (Norwich), is holding a 2HG event on each day. I don’t have a teammate unfortunately, so I am taking part in the main event on Saturday. Came 8th last year, so we will see if I can improve. All pre release events are sealed deck format, including the 2HG events. 2HG is an interesting format, and one that will see increased play with this set, as there has been some focus on multiplayer and teamwork in this set. Also we will see the introduction of a new mana type, colourless, into the game. Also… Read more »
If you like multiplayer, I’d also recommend giving the Commander format a go. The latest Commander 2016 pre instructed decks have just come out and they’re pretty awesome.
Well, now you’ve gone and done it. I’ve been deliberating over the 2016 Commander decks and you just tipped the scale. 😉
You can actually share your cards; you get one pool, consisting of two prerelease packs.
This means that the average power of each deck is actually a bit higher than in regular Sealed games.
I regularly play in the 2HG prereleases for a set, often followed by a regular event in the evening afterwards.
It’s a really interesting format, if you have a teammate you get along well with. Also a nice way for beginning players to do nicely by teaming up with a more experienced one.
I have got the white/black 2015 Commander deck, Call the Spirits. It’s heavy on the enchantments. When you cast an enchantment, the commander (Daxos) gets an experience token. He can also summon spirit tokens, and they have power and toughness equal to the commander’s experience, so the more you cast, the better your spirits get.
I’m wondering, does anyone have any experience with using allies or the Eldrazi in the Commander format? I’d be interested to see what they think.
