The White Council & Eagles (+ Radagast) Are Coming!
January 23, 2015 by brennon
As well as all those Sci-Fi things there's also the release of Radagast on Eagle and The White Council - Vanquishers of the Necromancer at Dol Guldur for The Hobbit. We had a look at them back when the leaks popped up but lets see what we think about the full on pre-orders from Games Workshop...
Radagast is shown mounted atop his Great Eagle holding onto his hat in a rather comical pose that captures his character very well. I like the whimsy of this piece and the sculpting is pretty good. Admittedly I think you could probably do some easy conversion work with one of the plastic eagles and a Radagast miniature but otherwise it's a nice piece.
The White Council are still a set I'm on the fence about. I kind of like the sculpted detail for Elrond, Galadriel and Saruman but I think the painting is kind of spoiling the image for me. Elrond is still in a rather awkward pose and I would have had him in his arms out, sword drawn stance where you first see him appear in Battle of the Five Armies. Or maybe even with his sword up high deflecting a blow.
Galadriel is very much in her war stance and I like the tattered dress but I think I would have painted her different. I actually also like her 'war form' from Fellowship of the Ring and would prefer to use that miniature I think. Last but not least is Saruman who looks much better but I still don't like the painting.
Overall, not a bad haul but nothing overly awesome to write home about. At least they're still producing stuff for the game!
What do you think?

None of those are particulary good compared to what we have got in past in LotR and The Hobbit lines.
So better pictures and I am afraid to say I am going to have to retract my nice comment, unless the paint job is making good mini look bad, and while sub-GW normal I cannot see that. Such a pity GW did not give the support they could have to the franchise, should have let it go to a company that would have made a decent go of it.
The transformed Ring-bearer Galadriel from the Mirror scene in Lothlorien was what I had hoped for in B0T5A. This rendition from The Hobbit looks more like Dragged Backwards through a Hedge Galadriel, or The Morning After the Party The Night Before Galadriel.
Elrond – nice armour, crap pose
Saruman – I do like that one.
Radagast on eagle – fine.
lol. “Dragged Backwards through a Hedge Galadriel.”
The latest Heroclix Hobbit releases are awesome!… oh! wait…
The eagle would not be too bad if I had not bought the same thing (granted, without the gnome on top) for literally ONE FIFTH of GW’s price just tonight (Gamezone Eagle no. 1 on sale for 10 EUR/7,50 GBP)…
Seriously, what are they thinking?
Really? I’ve been wanting several of those Gamezone eagles for some time now. Thanks for the tip!
As for the mini’s, Elrond looks like he’s just thrown a curveball, or has just been rogered. On closer inspection the bottom half of Galadriel still looks like Fred Flintstone. Bad paint doesn’t help any of it.
@trelibras Can you give me the link to that Gamezone sale? I don’t see it on the site.
Damn… @treslibras
It was on a German shop site: http://www.fantasy-in.de (unfortunately shipping costs to the UK are prohibitively expensive…)
Thank you. Looks like I missed the sale, though.
In fairness GW’s great eagles for the hobbit are a great set, and I would say good value.
Same characters we already have poses for >.<
Give me Dain on war piggy dagnabit!!
We can see the Perrys have left – They did carry the LotR so far.
If Peter Jackson could I wonder if he would send the license after them 😉
It would be the wise thing to do!
Such a negativity as usual when it comes too GW releases. No wonder they put down their facebook page and other social networks. These look great. Especially Saruman. I’m happy as long as they supply us with models for the Hobbit range wether I’ll buy them or not.
You ever met normal, well adjusted tabletop gamers? Doesn’t happen often does it..;)
To be fair Radagast on eagle is fine. Saruman is passable. But something’s definitely wrong with the other 2 (picture angle? Paintjob? Sculpts?).
Why are people so negative about GW? Maybe because it is the major company in our hobby and one of the most expensive : people are right to expect very good products and support for their games.
