Get Your Middle-Earth Gaming In At Warhammer World Soon
September 11, 2017 by stvitusdancern
If you are one of the many players getting back into The Hobbit SBG (Strategy Battle Game) or The Lord of the Rings and are free next weekend...
...then you might want to make your way to Games Workshop Headquarters in Nottingham UK and participate in the Throne of Skulls event at Warhammer World this coming weekend (September 16th-17th).
Per the announcement...
In the Throne of Skulls, players will align themselves with either the forces of Good or Evil (with separate tickets for each side in equal number) and do battle across five 1,000 point games in order to earn ‘_Fellowship_ Points’. The side that obtains the most Fellowship Points will be declared the winners of the weekend. On top of this, the player from each of the nine factions that receives the most Fellowship Points will join together to form Games Workshop’s Throne of Skulls Fellowship 2017.
As if that wasn’t enough, the person who plays their games with a spirit befitting the noblest of Hobbits, one that even Mr. _Bilbo_™ would be proud of, and earns the most Favourite Game votes, will become the overall winner of the Throne of Skulls and be awarded the coveted Middle-earth trophy!
Whilst playing their games, attendees at the Throne of Skulls can use a series of experimental Army Bonuses for the armies from The Lord of the Rings™, _as well as those from _The Hobbit™ _which, as of yet, do not have one.
Following their games on Sunday, players will be able to talk directly with the _Middle-earth team to provide feedback on the new rules and the games played over the weekend, thus helping to shape the future of the Strategy Battle Game. Click HERE to find the event pack and all of these Army Bonuses.
Adam Troke and Jay Clare from the Middle-earth team will both be in attendance as well, both as referees and as spare players should their services be required. Adam is still umming and ahhing about which army he should take (though we reckon he will go with his Easterlings), whilst Jay is working out how many Half Trolls and Mahûd Raiders he can squeeze into his Far Harad army!
Whilst the tickets available for those wishing to represent the forces of Good for this event have sold out, there are still a few left for the Evil side. So, if you are free over the weekend of the 16th-17th of September and fancy a weekend of fun games and camaraderie (as well as fighting in the name of the Dark Lord _Sauron_), then click HERE to get your tickets, but hurry, there are only a few left!
We’ll see you on the battlefield!
OK, I live 4000 miles away and I am excited for this one for a couple of reasons. First, it shows that GW knows how important this game is and how awesome it is to play. Second, there is a dedicated fan base and it is nice to see GW listening to their players.
Lastly, I cannot think of a better place to play a game of The Hobbit SBG or Lord of the Rings than at Warhammer World (I know I was there this summer and it is pretty awesome), unless you were to play it at Under the Hill in New Zealand (where the movies were filmed).
If I had an extra day or two I would seriously think about going.
Have you played The Hobbit SBG?

Its great to see GW renewing their interest in The Hobbit SBG. There were even a couple of new scenarios for the game in the latest White Dwarf!
All credit to the guys from the GBHL who gave Adam Troke the support he needed to keep the game alive during the blight years!
@osbad – do you mean that they kept flying the flag for the SBG and stopped it dying away completely or that they actually worked with Adam at some point?
Just curious. I wasn’t aware of them until I heard about their magazines on BoW. I then bought them all!
The LOTR SBG community kept the game alive all over the world (especially in the UK and Australia) and GW took notice. Sales weren’t good at all but people were playing the game and GW saw an opportunity to get them back into stores and buying minis. That’s what I’ve seen lately. For a game with a stable set of rules since 2004 (2012 changed the heroes to warriors ratio but not huge and a few extra rules for monsters and weapons) people are still coming up with new ideas and new scenarios. Plus having the books and movies as… Read more »
I see, thanks.
Those are very nice.
good to see the old figures back.
Why on (middle) earth did they call it ‘Thorne of skulls’?
Could you get any thurther from the lord of the rings theme.
Really glad they are giving a game I love some attention, but I hope the badly thought about, generic 40k esk title is not a bad sign that this is a one off.
Throne of Skulls is just the name given to all GW Tournements at warhammerworld, followed by a more thematic title based on which system is being played. In this case Throne of Skulls : War of the RIng.
Ok cool that makes some sense. Like I said. I love the game. My favourite GW game by far. I was very sad when it was put on the back burner. Good to see it being part ofnthe positive shift GW is on right now.
It’s a great game, glad that it’s going from strength to strength.
Support from GW is good. And we’ve had a tournament locally where we used the experimental army rules. They are pretty good!
And there was a 40k 8th ed tournament at the same time. We had more players playing LOTR/Hobbit!
Excellent news, this is still my fav GW wargame system to play, so it’s good to see them continuing to support it.
