Shadow & Flame Sculpt Up Middle-Earth’s Thorongil
November 22, 2015 by brennon
Shadow & Flame are a sculpting and painting service that do a lot of commission work for people surrounding The Lord of the Rings. One of their latest sculpts really caught my eye. See what you think of Thorongil...
Thorongil was the name that Aragorn used when he was younger to fight alongside the lords of Rohan and Gondor. As you can see Shadow & Flame have done some great work bringing this miniature to life and tying it into the aesthetic for the Rohirrim that the films went for.
The facial details are also recognisably Aragorn and I could certainly see this being a younger version of him. Of course these kind of sculpts aren't going to be on sale but if you're interested in getting a conversion sculpted up then these guys have some serious skills.
Interestingly Games Workshop DID make a model for Thorongil (here also painted by Shadow & Flame)...
I think that they've done a great job of keeping it in line with the design, as mentioned above, and this could be the kind of the thing that we could see from the new Middle-Earth studio from Games Workshop.
What do you think?

When you say “middle earth studio” are you talking about the Specialist Games Division that has recently been announced or have I missed something?
The LotR/TH line is getting moved over to the studio which will be handling Specialist Games.
Could just be the paintjob, but I think I prefer the S&F sculpt to the GW one.
Has anyone any solid links to where GW have made the statement that LotR will be considered a specialist game ? And when they say moved will the plastic boxed sets also be moved and kept as plastic?
Don’t think there’s anything solid yet – it was stated in the ‘flyer’ a GW store posted online, but that’s it.
‘Specialist game’ is a meaningless catch-all term that was given to the games that went online only and stopped being supported. It’s being resurrected as an easy short-hand for a new raft of online games designed by a studio which is separate from the main GW studio. LotR was slowly going online-only anyway. Now they’re going to be dealt with by their own small team of staff within that umbrella. As for solid links, the communication from Kevin Rountree and the job vacancies for the new project manager and sculptor are out there somewhere. If I get a chance later… Read more »
