Upcoming Smaug For Games Workshop’s Hobbit Line-Up Leaks!
December 1, 2014 by brennon
Games Workshop's Smaug has leaked onto the internet in this rather dark snapshot from this coming week's White Dwarf Magazine. See what you think of him...
Not a bad looking miniature and the sculpt, from what I can see, looks awesome. I would need to see it from a few more angles to get a good impression of it but it does look like it's an utterly stunning piece of work. He's mounted atop his pile of gold deep within Erebor during his conversation with Bilbo who you can see hiding behind a pillar at the front of the base.
The material is, of course, resin and it's got a hefty price tag as we mentioned on Saturday but if you're wanting your very own 'official' Smaug then there's one for you to pick up.
It will be interesting to see people do some conversions and have him atop some of the buildings in Laketown with Bard ready to shoot him.
What do you think?

It looks pretty good, not $500 good, but pretty good.
I second that
looks like a nice figure just to expensive & probably a limited run as well.
I second that
It’s a nice figure just too expensive & probably a limited run as well.
First impressions are positive so would be nice to see some better images
Show the goddam pics GW so we can have a proper look.
We at golem painting studio would love to be commissioned for this!!!!!!
I don’t know about the pose. Half of the model seems to be obscured by the wings.
It looks suprisingly good for being dragon made by GW. Not worth it’s high price but still good looking dragon.
It’s nice but need to see more of it first a shoot of the kit. But $500 is a lot to me and would be to many others i can get a load of hobby stuff for that right now.
does someone have a link for where you are finding this price?
AFAIK it is based on rumours doing the rounds on the forums.
Not sure of the original source.
So we can still have some hope that he will be a little less?
I’m sure it would be in vain- GW rumors are rarely wrong.
Well if it is correct that the rumoured price is equivalent to some Forgeworld resin pieces then I don’t hold much hope of it being less.
Didn’t realise that FW had such expensive models.
Would want remote control for that much cash! lol
Far from useful as a gaming model, and not only because of the ridiculous price! Wouldn’t it have been better to have flying pose…at least that could have been used on the tabletop….another kick in the teeth for anyone that still wants to play Lord of the Rings or War of the Ring. Looks like Gw are going to drop this line like a hot potato once the final film has hit the screens. This looks like one last attempt to ring more money from collectors before the range is dropped!
Not impressed…yet again.
It would need one heck of a chuck of clear rod to support the bugger! lol
I take your point, and if there was going to be a scenario and stats for Smaug, it would have been much better.
Am guessing that most people that do buy the model wouldn’t be wanting to play and the beast is a centrepiece/painting project
that said, I mean, who wouldn’t want to recreate the Battle of Lake-Town?
I would and so have splashed out £12 for the LOTR LCG Adventure Pack today! Whoo-hoo
Yet another scenario for me to get repeatedly butt-whupped lol
Surely Ben you means he’s made out of “resin” – GW’s dropped the Finecast label because it’s cheap. I think the mini, from the typically blurred leaked image that looks like it’s been taken by a 10 year old phone, looks great but at that price and in “resin” I’d be highly dubious as to its actual material quality. None of this matters to me as I don’t have the money, but still. I’d love to paint him up and flex my average airbrush skills but at £300+/- – no thanks, you’d have to be well paid and Hobbit obsessed,… Read more »
My God, ‘means’ – ‘taken by a 10 year old phone’ instead of ‘with’. If only I had the excuse of beer and old toby, sadly it looks like my morning cuppa hasn’t kicked in yet 🙁
If you are also looking forward to your second breakfast about now, you are most definitely a Hobbit!
I’m assuming this is hand-poured resin. Finecast was spin-cast resin.
Well, if he’s a Forge World product, then the resin he’s made of is of industry standard quality (where ‘industry standard’ is a lot higher than the first waves of Finecast).
Actually, I’ve seen quite a bit of more recent GW ‘finecast’ resin, which is actually an ok material now. They must have gotten some quality control people who figure that they need to control the quality.
The Cmon dragon Cang the Implacable is pretty much the measuring stick for large dragons, that as $300 or thereabouts, and looks to be a lot bigger than smaug. Still, its smaug, and I dint think I would actually see it.
If the $500 price point is legit, then I don’t think it’s excessive. It’s at the high end, but not excessive. If you want a dragon to put on the gaming table, this isn’t it.
Why do games workshop keep having these leaked photos. We know that it’s them leaking them so just go back to actually having press releases etc
If the price is in the 300 to 500 range I would have thought they would pass it off to Forge World as they exclusively deal in resin and are accustomed to selling things at a high price. Some of the models they sell are at that price and higher, so it would fit right in.
Its another G.W. time waster as far as I can tell. Its out of anyone but the seriously obsessed or wealthy’s price range and unfortunately (unless there are some very creative rules?) looks like being completely useless in gaming terms.
I’ll stick with titans.
Don’t know if I can play with it. Probably can’t afford it. Definitely going to be unable to paint it in a way that will do it justice.
It’s going on the Christmas Wish List regardless.
Nope, not doing it for me and it’s not just because he needs some arms.
it could be the angle though
The film Smaug doesn’t have any forelegs, and uses what would be his wrists (?) to walk on.
Technically he should be called a Griffon.
You can make out the claws on his wings in the photo
I think you mean a wyvern.
Thanks @Erastus.
Indeed. Just woke up and still sleepy when I posted herp derp
His anatomy of his wings is batlike- Peter Jackson’s people try to make their creatures seem more plausible by making sure they have solid real life anatomical references (there’s a little cat in there too, but that’s true of most dragons). The way he walks is also a speculated walk of pterosaurs. The trouble you’re having, though, is the lack of six appendages. Which is fine. Just remember that the difference between a Wyvern and Dragon (and Terrasque and more) is something that TSR made up so that they could include entries for all of them in their Monster Manuals.… Read more »
The movie version of Smaug was still crap IMHO, whatever you call it.
Wyverns as a beastie with only 2 legs as a distinction from Dragons dates back well before D&D but I take your point
ps flying insects have 10 “appendages” 😛
A griffon is half lion half eagle nothing like Smaug @chibi.

Yeah I know
brain working at less than optimum
Smaug is more Batdrake. Half bat, half duck 😛
Batman = half man, half cricket
happens to us all at times.
I’m sure some people will buy it. But that price tag is too steep for my tastes, for something that would probably get limited play time. It would definitely just be a display model for many people, I think.
That photo is not doing it any favours, head looks off – but better photos soon. Resin is not what I expected – and certainly given recent history of GW resin not something that would make this an enjoyable build. Part of me would love this, the practical part know I would not use it (poor support for the hobbit a big factor) and there is another part that says when does a miniature cease to be a miniature. I think airbrush would be a must for this, and I am not a fan of huge models. On balance even… Read more »
I’ll reserve judgement until I can see better pics. I’m not a huge fan of the way Smaug was done in the films (I prefer the wings separate to the forearms look), although it did grow on me. I like the look of the base though – that looks really cool! It’s a shame the kit isn’t in plastic. Even though GW clearly aren’t interested in doing anything with the Hobbit line, I thought that a fantastic plastic kit might be popular enough for them to decide to do it. Especially given some of the other things which have been… Read more »
