Forge World Shows Off New Releases For The Hobbit
February 27, 2017 by stvitusdancern
Over the weekend Forge World gave those lucky enough to be attending The Hobbit Grand Tournament at Warhammer World some first looks into the new releases coming for The Hobbit Strategy Battles Game.
Up first is something for all the Woodland Elf fans out there (me!), Thandruil, the Woodland Elf King riding into battle on his mighty Elk. The detail is exceptional and I am a fan of the large resin base to mount him on when you are not playing and want to display him.
Some comments on Facebook have expressed concern over the possible cost of this miniature based on the display base. I, on the other hand, am looking at it as a centrepiece to my collection.
The next group to come up are the Iron Hills Dwarfs which include the Command section with Mattocks and Iron Hills Dwarfs with Mattocks. All mighty fierce warriors in their own right.
Lastly, all our favourite heroes and races need bad guys to fight and the Forge World has answered the call with two exceptional Troll models: Gundabad Troll with Crushing Club and Gundabad Troll with Scythe Gauntlets. Both will be formidable enemies and will present quite the challenge to our heroes.
I am very excited by the rebirth of The Hobbit Strategy Battles Game and new miniatures being added, I only wish my bank account was as well.
Have you tried The Hobbit Strategy Battle Game?

I have been really impressed with the Hobbit/Lord of the Rings releases since Forgeworld have taken over the production. I am the proud owner of a small Iron Hills and Gundabad force (some are almost finished being painted…..sigh) and will be adding the trolls and dwarfs to them when they are released. Hell, when he is released I may even have a look at the girly, surly elf king (bloody elves)
Those are some great looking models for Hobbit.
I wish GW’s sculptors would actually look up the animal they’re sculpting before they attempt to make one. That elk looks ridiculous.
Ridiculous compared to what? What a normal Elk looks like, or the Elk that Thranduil rides in The Hobbit, which the model would obviously be based on?
I’ve only got the one angle to look at this model from, but it seems to be perfectly in keeping with the film version of this Elk.
If you’re complaining about it not looking like a normal Elk…then…I dunno…
Yes, Thranduil’s Elk in the films had ridiculously portioned antlers.
I really love that vignette of Thranduil
That explains it. I only made it through half a hobbit movie. My mistake.
No surprise there. I loved the original trilogy but the Hobbit was hard work to get through. Dire stuff.
Irish Giant Elk (?) – Prime display piece in Irish museums and top beasty on Irish coat-of-arms.
Forgeworld could have called into the Ulster Museum and sat on a replica 🙂
Looks like they have merged horse and elk anatomy (?) – but nobody ever rode a Giant Elk – did they?
Well… this one time at band camp… 😉
Sculpts are stunning and the design team are doing a great job. Unfortunately after the goat release they have priced me out of being interested. Not the middle earth teams fault, rather a persistant negative GW pricing issue as they believe they are a designer brand. Of course for our antipodian friends they probably work out cheaper the the failcast rubbish.
Indeed my friend … It is much cheaper
They don’t just believe they are a designer brand. They openly state that they are a designer brand.
I’m generally critical of GW’s general aesthetic, but the LotR/Hobbit stuff is great. I’m not sold on the Elk though, the pose just looks odd.
To me the Elks front legs are too far back and the back legs not enough forward…..makes him look like he’s about to faceplant the floor. Trolls are nice.
some fantastic looking figures coming out here.
Great sculpts for a great game, however prices are obscene!
I like the look of that Gundabad Troll with Club. That’s a proppa ‘uge brute with that Black Orc helmet and fully decked out in armor.
