Amazon To Produce Long Running Lord Of The Rings TV Adaptation
November 14, 2017 by brennon
As many of us are big fans of The Lord of the Rings hopefully there was a bit of excitement this week as Amazon announced that they were going to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line in order to bring Middle-Earth to the small screen with its own series.
There's no word at this early stage as to what stories they're going to be pursuing but it won't re-tell the story of The Lord of the Rings itself, made spectacularly for the silver screen by Peter Jackson.
Instead, they are going to be looking at unexplored stories from Tolkien's original writings which sounds like it could be fascinating. Personally, I'm hoping for some Elladan & Elrohir (seen below) action with Elrond's two sons going off on some adventures.
As a long time Middle-Earth fan it's great to hear that there is still work going on to try and bring more of it to different mediums. Amazon has done some sterling work on TV programs over the last few years and hopefully, they'll have a good team behind this looking to tell some wonderful stories.
Are you looking forward to this?

I dont know why I bother sometimes 😉
Sorry to be a downer but this has anti-climax written all over it.
At the end of the first season, we introduce a new character who – on the same page that he’s introduced- kills the dragon. We’ll make up for this anticlimax by having a lead up to a huge battle- but we’ll have our viewpoint character spend the whole battle unconscious.
What I would love to see is TV series based on Silmarillion and other stories from era before Hobbit and LotR but I don’t believe we would ever see that. Besides some of battles from that era like ones during War of the Wrath are far bigger than any battles that we have seen in movies so those would surely exceed TV budget.
Some of the Silmarillion scenarios would make great backdrops and there would be a lot of space to develop something fitting without having to stretch stuff like they did with the Hobbit.
Just imagine the whole Gondolin thing with countless Balrogs and Elven Power to match them… okay not quite stuff for the small screen but still very tempting.
But in these age of hype and disappointment I will manage my expectations.
High hopes for this one, beside game of thrones I don’t remember a good fantasy tv show
I have extremely low hopes for this.
Peter Jackson’s LotR is the final adaptation that we need. Remaking it as a series does not sound like a good idea. Ian McKellen did such a good job as Gandalf that I cannot believe anyone else in the part is actually Gandalf.
And Amazon definitely picked this up because they want a sure bet. That means that they’re less interested in wandering around the extended lore of Middle Earth- they’ll want to remake the central story.
On the one hand i think that the Silmarillion collection of stories would be a good choice, especially given that they have Christopher Tolkien working on them in any case. ( Mind, i’ve yet to read one of his novels, so i can’t speak to their worth. ) On the other hand i boycott Amazon and i’m intending to boycott Newscorp, who alas are the parent company of HarperCollins, so in effect it doesn’t matter much to me, excepting that it puts an end to anyone else doing this for the time being. In any case, i’m finding myself choosing… Read more »
The fact they aren’t remaking Lord of the Rings is a positive for me, although I’d love me some scouring of the shire. Will it be good, I hope so ,,,, if it is this is going to be awesome.
more preciousness.
nice.
Considering how studios wish to modernize, update, and PC everything lately, I’m not really holding out much hope.
I am looking forward to watching this. TV series allows for character development and I would love to see something slightly more adult rated and sticking a bit more to the original Tolkien universe not the Hollywood version.. let’s say Vikings meets Lord of the Rings. And they should shoot it in NZ 🙂
if Christopher Tolkien is involved i have hope.
the biggest hurdle will be the language used. getting it to look like Tolkien is easy enough, but sounding like the professor is something else entirely. really obvious in the films what is Tolkiens and what is Jacksons. doing stories that have little to no input from the professor could be risky.
