Flames Of War 4th Edition Boot Camp: Day Two
Oriskany's El Alamein Campaign Begins - Battle For The Centre Ground
We catch up with Oriskany (Jim) and find out how we've been playing out the first game of the 'campaign'.
It looks like we're going to have some serious battles for the centre ground here today. So, with that in mind we'll dive in and find out how the gamers are getting on in a little bit.
It’s clever how you are doing the campaign i really like it
Come on afrika korps you can do it
So does the American guy have a YouTube channel ?
Oriskany? No, he does a lot of articles for us on Historical wargaming.
🙂
Nice progress of the battle. Will Rommel get flanked? Can’t wait for the results
If Battlefront ever wants to run a global campaign as part of a Flames of War promotion, they should ask Oriskany to help run the thing. His campaign articles on this site are very well done.
Seconded
I cant agree with you more. Sounds like a natural team up between FOW, BOW and James
agree.
Wow, guys, thanks very much for the votes of confidence! 😀
Come on Brits, stop em, pin em, crush em
chuck smoke out and run down the centre!
I wonder if a global “Firestorm” campaign would be a cool idea?
Shaping up to be very interesting
I like seeing the historical “start point” looking forward to seeing how this plays out.
Campaigns fascinate me as I have never been able to take part in one. Look forward to following this one. Looks like a great way to get into running them.
@firebuck – Thanks very much. I don’t think new campaigns need to be nearly as complicated as many people think … At least at first. Start super simple and once everyone gets their feet wet, build up gradually from there. You’ll be running awesome campaigns in no time. 🙂
I assume the outcome of each battle affects where the next engagement takes place and what type of engagement it is. In some campaigns I have played, losing could mean you started your next battle with lower morale and fewer points with which to play AND it could also limit the range of choices available – maybe too harsh for a bootcamp but it’s war ladies and gentlemen 🙂
The way we’re running it, @dorthonion (again, very light and simple) is the winner of a given game gets to dictate where and “how” the next battle takes place. Some players are taking the “campaign conditions” of their battle and trying to use some of the great mission scenarios in the back of the Flames of War 4Ed book, so their games reflect a little of what’s happening on the campaign map. In a “full scale” operational campaign game, yes . . . conditions and momentum on the operational campaign ma have huge (and often unfair) impacts on the tabletop… Read more »
What a great overview and lesson. Just loving it.
Great to see the games being played will affect a greater purpose. Adds a level of fun.
This will be interesting. Originally Auchinleck hit mostly the Italian units, bringing the DAK on a bad footing. With no Italians, the Germans might do it ( as men and materiel are not worn out either). Jerry should have the upper hand.
Time to hold the line
Adds such nice flavor to the weekend. top notch as always from you guys.
That looks amazingly fun to play! Too bad I couldn’t make it 🙁
One of these days we’re get you in one of these, @neves1789, or another WWDDC-style online campaign. 😀
That campaign looks awesome. If ze germans play it wrong they could get enveloped and have a pocket fighting on all sides.
Jim, excellent work. I now get how you related individual battles to the greater scheme of maneouvre on your map. Great fun, I am sure!
@m30wm1x – this exact thing damned near happened historically.
@sircaroon15 – thanks! It’s hectic, and it’s a little stressful keeping everything straight at a
boot camp pace, WHILE trying to play your own tabletop game against some seriously badass opponents. But yes, definitely fun!
Wow this looks intense.
Oriskany, know his stuff that’s for sure.
Thanks, @troybuckle ! ;D
Interesting. Looks like great fun.
I really got tô put my hands on this set!
Campaigns are great fun as they give an end goal to each game and add a strategic depth to tactical decisions made on the table. Looks like tons of fun and! Keep up the good work guys! Though I miss the period uniforms you guys wore during some of the version 3 vids!!
