Oriskany Takes Boot Campers Through World War 2.5

Going back in time slightly we have oriskany taking some of the Boot Camp members through his World War 2.5 game that you might remember from back during his article series earlier in the year.

They're just getting started now and this could have sowed the seeds for the inevitable Team Yankee we saw over the weekend.

looks like a campaign… ^^

That’s totally what it is, an operational-scale game that lasts 15 or 30 days, puts 2 million men in the field, and covers a battlefield half the size of Germany.

Yes would make for a great campaign where team Yankee battles could be played out to win or lose key places. I love those kinds of campaigns. Something to play for and battle at the strategic and battle/skirmish level

Originally written for 1946, but could easily be re-purposed or re-imagined for a Soviet invasion of West Germany in 1985 for a Team Yankee campaign.

This was written for Beasts of War back in February-March in conjunction with an article series about a hypothetical war between former allies, the US and UK against Soviet Russia, in the immediate aftermath of World War 2.

Basically, it’s World War 3 . . . with World War 2 weapons and equipment.

The article series describes it best:

The hexes… they burn! Argh… now I have the urge to play Squad Leader or Panzer Grenadier!

Hex and counter for the win! Looks like an interesting scenario to play as well, have to read up on it.

The article series starts here. There are four parts, and backstagers can download the game to print-and-play themselves.

Surprised it took oriskany so long to show people, with his passion for Lloydaslavia! Would have thought he’d have done this day one!

I didn’t want to oversell it. 😀

Nice looking game! Cardboard only pieces counts a lot of my friends out. Shame since lots of good games only have those.

All respect to minis . . . these old-school counter games are where it’s at. And with greatly smoothed-out mechanics (no more CRTs) . . . and vastly improved print quality, these kinds of games have been making a comeback in recent years. Just check out Memoir 44, Pacific 44, Tide of Iron, Fury of the Bear, etc.

I really do miss playing my hex based cardboard chit games like Advanced Third Reich and A World At War.

Avalon Hill’s “Rise and Decline of the Third Reich?” A true classic.

Who can forget our “characters,” Major Wyte and Captain Harold Peters (partly named after Harold Coyle, who originally wrote the Team Yankee novel)?

looks great. Would fit into a campaign style well for Team Yankee

It could easily be re-imagined as such. Pretty much just designate each turn = 12 hours instead of 3 days and you would still get some very realistic results.

Right, @zorg ? I should say thanks very much to Rob, Andrew, Guillaume, and Rasmus for giving this game a try. They picked it up after the first turn and after that I basically got to sit back and watch. MAN, it was close! It came down to the VERY LAST dice roll, one last desperate German-British counterattack of Soviet-occupied Hannover . . . with 6th Airborne dropping deep into East Germany and the 82nd Airborne dropping behind the Soviet spearhead at Würzburg . . . Warren and Justin were standing there as the last climactic dice toll was thrown… Read more »

It were great and good for clearing the head after a weekend spend in Team Yankee land – and the first US counterstrike in the Fulda Gab is one I remember.
Have to get it printed. …

That WAS a great counterattack. A true “second Prokhorovka” 😀

Now, this looks like a lot of fun! Reminds me of all the unplayed ConSims on my shelfs….Oh well ; )

Cheers!

I guess like any game, exactly how much fun it is usually comes down to the players. This group in particular ran a truly epic game. Just the right amount of “Patton-Monty” or “Zhukov-Konev” friction for good laughs, great team cooperation, just the right amount of aggression vs. risk assessment. One thing in particular, I didn’t put down a single “Isolation” counter. We didn’t even have to learn that part of the rules. This is because no one allowed themselves to become isolated or “cut off.” The Allies didn’t defend hopeless positions too long and maintained an intact, cohesive line… Read more »

I really enjoyed the articles based on this game previously. It’s exactly the type of campaign I love.

Thanks, @roboute73 ! The articles were quite a while ago, but given the theme of the Bootcamp, it seemed to fit and had a great game.

I would be in for a WW2.5 bootcamp

oriskany

Oof! That’s a lot of counters to cut! I think my fingers would fall off!! :). But there are tons of great wargames on the market now that are quick and easy, and even have some very simple playing pieces (not quite “miniatures”). Check out Tide of Iron or Band of Heroes. 🙂
