Masking Techniques With Will - How Did It Turn Out?

John steps in and talks with Will about the masking technique he was using on his tanks to see how it turned out. It seems like it really was a pretty awesome use of an ingenious substance to get some very nice clean designs.

With that in mind we'd love to see how other people come up with camouflage techniques on the tabletop. This seems like a quick and easy way to do it though...if you have some faith in the hobby Gods!

Planning out the pattern must be difficult. It’s seem like you have to think in termns of a “negative.”

so true I guess you could switch the color around but I think leaving the little gaps might work out the best. I am sure in the desert war there were some pretty hasty work done just to get the tanks out to the front. Anyway that would be my excuse in case I messed up!

Looks awesome. Is it hard to pull out of fine detail?

no you just use the putty to sticky to itself and then pull it away from it, or like William said, leave it overnight and it will be a pool on the table and then just clean it off the tracks 😉

Planning it first – I suggest getting something from your ‘bits box’ and trying it out there before going near the actual minis. It sounds like removal is the harder part and I would worry a little about breaking parts like hull mg’s and so on. It should be fine for most of the work.

Good camo pattern.
Looks very handy. I will have to remember that for when I paint more of my tanks.

I have been painiting minis since 1988, why havn´t I thought about masking with putty before? I have to try it myself (it looks really good and still so easy).

Putty is fast, but I believe I would use a thick liquid mask and cut out the areas I want painted if I was doing this myself with a lot more time than these guys have a the camp.

The masking with the putty looks really good. I’ve used this technique in the past and found it to work great.

So its science putty not panzer putty. I bet thats just normal silly putty. I like the photo of the lid. The soldier in the background clearly has a handful of the putty ready to throw.

yeap it’s silly putty, I like the fact it’s a third of the price of panzer putty ^^

I’ve used the technique with blue tac as the mask and it’s quick and produces a great effect. I painted my il2 for my Soviet force in no time..

I also spray the lighter colours first, then mask off and spray the darker ones. The darker colours cover better, if you go light over dark you can end up doing multiple coats..

Was the blue tac easy to remove afterwards?

I had no problems, I didn’t leave it on for too long thou just waited for the paint to dry. It was a little bit sticky in places but a spare bit of blue tac is great for removing other blue tac.

If you do use blue tac don’t leave it as I said as it contains oils which can leach out onto your paint work.. White tac is another alternative but I’ve not used it yet..

Great results… a quick paint of the tracks etc and a wash or two and they’ll look awesome.
