John's Painting Tutorial - Skeleton

We catch up with John again and find out how he went about painting up the Skeleton from the RuneWars set for the forces of Waiqar.

How do you find the look of the scheme?

Love the paint job. Humans is still my favourite faction, though.

Love the skeletons, what great looking minis. With the look of the mini as it is it reminds me of Evil Dead. The human faction looks really nice too. I don’t think I would have used the gun metal straight as a highlight. I think I would have mixed it with the bronze you used for the armor, it would have given a much more natural highlight.

I’m surprised by how much I like the look of the skeletons because, quite frankly, I’ve been feeling rather burned out on undead. But there’s just something about those guys that’s really appealing. Maybe it’s all the battle damage, the heavily chipped sword and the shield that’s beaten all to hell is a really nice look. And those dark, dirty tones really accentuates the grimy, raggedness of the models. I might actually like them more than the Daqan, and I didn’t expect that at all.

These skellies have a more heftier look to them and much more dynamic than just a “naked” skeleton frame!

End result on the shield was especially nice. Great to see that minis can be painted to that standard so quickly.

I good paint job John, I’d suggest using either Green Tone or maybe Army Shader on the eyes to tone the yellow into the green a bit more?

Good job John, it’s nice to see the progression and how it turns out in the end. On the eyes I think I liked the darker look with the shadow in the eye socket. Perhaps if you add some dark tone or strong tone back in the eyes it might leave some of the highlight in place and just shade the socket back to a darker edge again.

grest work there John, love what you did with that skeleton. for glowing eyes i guess i wouldn’t do much else than you did, i would just go for other colors, red or blue.

and a quick addition to that … darker reds or blues with just a tiny dot of brighter tones in the middle.

I wouldn’t have gone with the pinkish colour for the cloth myself… But it turned out to be a great contrast in the end. Also, I like my skeletons’ armour to be all rusty and I have a really quick technique to achieve a nice rust effect. Really nice result for omething paint4ed that quick, though.

The eyes were a good idea but you did them in the wrong order, the inner dot should go first and then the outer glow, or you have a 90% of possibilities of messing up all the zone. A nice colour scheme, and I really like the wood on the shield.

Looks great. Those glow eyes remind of a piece of art that mantic did for dungeon saga.

That came out really well, definately prefer this to the spearman from yesterday. For the eyes I think I would have done the green as you did but just really lightened up the same colour with white for the eyeball so it looked a bit more glowy.

Great tutorial as usual from John. Ref eyes for speed I just dab a bit of dark tone at the end and let it do its magic. Makes them stand out without having to go back and paint them.

mmmh i think i would have used a dark iron and a wash for a fastpaint

Love the Skeletons, I really like what you did up to the the eyes. I liked the green if you had left it with the wash it would have been fine. I am of the belief that eyeballs shouldn’t be painted at 28mm and tend to stick to highlight and washing of faces. Due to the large eye sockets I understand the temptation and would stop at a glow effect IMHO. I really like your choice of armor colors and purples and intend to copy them. Overall very well done sir.
