How To Play Team Yankee #2 – Choppers!

We're back with Anders talking about the ways in which you can use Helicopters in games of Team Yankee.

As you'll know by now the choppers on offer are the HIND and the Cobra.

it looks like helicopters are going to rule the roost until the anti air turns up. Are there rules for fighter cover?

Note to self. Don’t leave home without the anti-air

The Hunter-Killer rule for the US is a good call. I had a cavalry platoon on maneuvers in 76-7 and even though we were in the woodline we got “acquired” by a troop of Cobras and could not see them even when they popped up. They were at almost max distance for TOWs.

dang, knocking out choppers with TOWs. Not going to be hard to knock out the Hinds.

Yeah… Now we talk… Those Cobras are so tiny vs. the HINDs… ^^

Wonder if the Hind’s troop carrying capabilities will be a big factor in the future.

I don’t want to sound like a crotchety old gaming fart (OK, I *am* 62) but you are not going to see Cobras hunting Hinds or vice-versa. Their job is to kill stuff on the ground. I’m not saying some enterprising Warrant Officer wouldn’t try that if they were in a pinch but TOWs are for killing stuff on the ground. You’d see the nose guns used on helos more than TOWs.

I was a little surprised that the air to air missile combat between helicopters was a big part of the game. I assumed ground AA and fighter aircraft were going to be the main anti helicopter component. interesting.

I would agree with mwcannon’s comment. The helicopters are meant to hunt tanks and IFV, APV. Leave the helicopters to the long list of anti-air missiles and guns that will flow out of Battle Front’s armouries.

Great video, this was one of the examples I really wanted to see.

Actually, one tactic was for the helos to use pop up attacks to engage AA thus clearing the airspace for fast movers like the A-10.

After seeing this video i’m a little less concerned about the combined size of six hinds.

Th3se hind are pretty big…we run a test match using the shilkas and ghoper AA unit, and they could ground every damned cobras they can see, another interesting thing is that every weapon can shot at aircraft in the opponent’s turn, so you can puor a lot of lead out before the helos fire; you lose some thinghs like asault and defensive fire with the weapon that shoot at choppa…but you ca n still fire the other weapons

No, Anders said AA response fire stops you shoting in your next phase – so AA response OR fire in your next phase.

Are we sure about the self defence AA guns stopping you firing next turn?? I ask because in WW2 FoW self defence AA doesn’t stop you shooting etc next turn but it does make you top armour 0 making you vulnerable to artillery attacks, air strikes and infantry assaults…
