We talk about some of the techniques that we can start to use when approaching painting your miniatures with base coats.
With that in mind, how do you approach the base coating stage?
Discipline, that’s where it all goes out the window for me.

Sitting staring at my Doom box set think I will need to use the army painter method on those to bash them out quick. I have not even painted a single model yet! Yet again so gutted I cant be present. I will make a piggy bank to save up for a boot camp!

Shows well how to paint bigger numbers of models. Good to see John got his own custom jacket as well as Justin.
Discipline, so that is the key! I think we will all sit there and with the best intentions start out strong, I know I need to improve the just getting them all done aspect.
I didn’t even consider using coloured sprays to get the “deepest” colours on more complex models, I was simply considering using them for the “largest” amount of colour, like green on a goblin regiment, It also took me quite a while to figure out how useful a size 4 brush was, if only for keeping it dry so that I can use it to absorb washes or paints I’ve thinned too much
A fellow American who came across for a bootcamp. Martin is living my dream. Most of my life I’ve lived far away from a lot of other gamers and I’d love to come to a bootcamp someday.

I love AP primer they do help a lot!
I would guess the comments about discipline are the keys to doing larger armies where all the mini’s have the same colour scheme.
airbrush and brush for me.. been years since I bought a new can of spraypaint
Agreed, I almost always use my airbrush for priming and/or main base colour. I’ve only got a cheap air brush, but it’s fine for this kind of thing. And it’s still cheaper than buying all the different cans of spray paint I’d want. Plus, as I get better at using it, allows me to do some interesting colour transitions. Notably my flames look 100x better now.
I am totally all for airbrushes but there is definitely a time and place for spray cans, especially depending on the gamer / hobbyist. I simply don’t have time (yet) for an airbrush (no matter how badly I want one! 🙂 ) and cans of spray base coats and primer are a godsend to just get my minis half way ready for the table top. Horses for courses as they say.
thats why i usualy don’t paint large armys … i lack the discipline to soldier on through them.
i thought it was just the wife who could discipline?

For some reason I hate this paint method. I can only paint like 2 minis at a time like this. I just want to complete them before moving on to next two.
I’m the same, painting squads just makes frustrated. My armies are always very character heavy for that reason! But this (and the other videos) are showing good strategies for handling squads so I’m definitely planning on making use of some of the approaches and techniques being shown.
I think I need some kind of tangible incentive to have enough discipline to bash a bunch of models out like this.
Discipline is what we painters do eh 🙂
Grind through those armies and not buying new mini’s befor ALL is DONE 🙂

Yep the second big scary monster for painting miniatures is: start painting!
stop whining grab the brush and lay down some paint! even for just 30 min!
Do it!
You can have Armies done that way!
But if you keep thinking “Oh gawd i would like to paint but i’ve only 1 hour i won’t accomplish anything” you’ll get NOTHING!
Yup, just get some colours on your mini’s.
The next best thing in my mind is:
Prep your next project before you finish your last. That way if your done, you can keep doing some fun stuff and don’t stagnate because you have nothing prepped.
The rune wars models really mix a nice sculpt and simple sculpt to make for a good result with this paint method.
You have to use the big brushes for the base paintiing. Gets it done faster.

I am scared of big brushes. big brushes mean big cleanup of the model.
I use the Army Painter: Regiment brush for base coats. It’s not hard to base coat with a larger brush, just practice point control while near areas that are going to be a different color.
Discipline is the hardest part
