Boot Camper John's Afrika Korps

One of the Boot Camp members, John, talks through why he chose the Afrika Korps and indeed what he's looking to do with them over the weekend.

Of course while they might be fighting in the desert with a different lick of paint these tanks could be off fighting in Eastern Europe instead!

It's neat that we're even seeing some metal inside those tanks to give them a significant heft on the tabletop.

So you are heading through airport security and they say “Sir, there’s an anomoly in your bag’s scan.”

Your answer:

A) oh, that’s split shot, or
B) that’s someone else’s bag

lol. You know i have never taken an army on a plane carry on before, and i always wondered if the airport security would give you a hard time about it or not.

Could be cool to paint them grey but give them some big chips to show desert colours underneath.

Good stuff…. I like the idea of detressing by some tactical pre build

I’ve always thought that desert warfare was more suited to these smaller scales.

The film desert fox gives a good insight into the war in afrika and I learnt a lot about Rommel Deffo worth a watch for anyone interested in this kind of history

Well, some of the tanks in the DAK were painted grey at the beggining so painting them grey for a Eastern front and using them in Afrika is not that far fetched.

Love the afrika Korps panzer 3s. Hoping to see Rommel can roll over the British.

It is nice to see the early war being promoted. Personally I like Operation Compass and the Italians. I look forward to seeing *cough cough* Italian plastics in the near future. The Italian armored divisions actually did perform very well… but they get overlooked by the Germans. For one thing, by 42′ the m13/40 was under gunned and poorly armored. The Italian crews had to have excellent “shoot, scoot and communicate” skills to survive. I recommend reading “Iron Hulls, Iron Hearts” to get a less biased account of the Italians in the desert.

Great detail on the models. Going to have to start building a desert board.

I like the idea of having a DAK army, most people i know play late war but i think that there is a lot of room to maneuver in game-play with the desert campaigns and the change of scenery would be nice as well ha ha

I’m with this guy. Do what building you must and then play. Painting and other assembly can wait until you get home. Why waste fun gaming time?

I agree, painting time is easier to find than great gaming opportunities. Play now, paint later!

Agree. If one grows their army over time piecemeal and there is no three day window to game, paint first. But the allure of the Boot Camps is you get to game with folks you don’t normally meet, so game first.
