Dropfleet Commander Boot Camp – Friday
Asking Questions & Fiddlin’ With Sprues!
Folks are now truly getting stuck into building their Fleets and with that folks are also asking some rules questions of Dave from Hawk Wargames.
Do you have any questions you'd like to pose on building fleets and more?
My only gripe with building the ships so far is the join on the upper hull of the Scourge cruisers, is it just a case of greenstuffing the gap. UCM had that lovely top section which covered a multitude of sins.
Hey, that’s not a rules question! 😛
Oops, nevermind I just watched the VLOG about ships in lower atmosphere with John, Justin and Warren… so my mind was on rules interpretations. Doh!
My question for Dave is simply;
How do you do it!? How do you make such gorgeous models and fun rules?!
My question is: aren’t bombers a bit too powerful?
….Prayers to the gods of Battle of each race get answers from the same font of War wisdom without they even knowing…..
Would magnetizing the ships to switch between different types work?
@bhrian, magneting is totally doable, all my UCM cruisers can switch between all variants. I didn’t bother doing the same for frigates because I have so many of the little beggars. Though I was watching one video online and it looks like you can do partswapping with minimal work on the UCM frigates because the side panels fit together very tightly.
Exactly what I wanted to know.
Thanks for the question and the answer! 🙂
yes it works but the cost in magnets and time is high, the models are so lovely I was thinking of just buying more models.
Will hawk be releasing a army builder for drop fleet ?
There is a good army builder. Dflist.com.
I’d ask Dave what’s like, seeing this game take off like it has!
what’s Justin building?
It’s either a secret space station destroying super weapon or he’s just skiving and been caught on camera. Warren get the beat stick out again and get him back to work.
It is amazing to see the guys building still more models for the game. It must be truly amazing for John and Justin to be so into it, even after all the prep work.
All the BoW Lets Plays and Demos have tide me over until I can get my hands on the rule book.
I’m just hoping the crew remember to get some shots of games in progress.
When will Justins giant….beard be returning?
I have watched the play-thru that you guys posted a while back. I must say that the fact that the ships are battling over a planet makes much more sense than another ship-to-ship game I played many years ago where the battles took place in deep space. It just never seemed right that 2 fleets could run into each other in the vastness of the universe. Also, there was never any substantial objectives as there are in Dropfleet…
What have you done with Justin? I want a wig woven from his beard.
That’s a lot of ships to build!
Looks like everyone is having a great time.
Havn’t gotten my minis yet, but I’m planning on using magnet for as much as possible.
One size of magnets or do you need more?
And what size of magnets? 😉
@nakul, For my UCM cruisers I put 2mm x 2mm post-shaped ones at three points in the upper hull for connecting the dorsal hull panel – the front two lined up with the gun points for the heavy cruiser panel; and 3mm x 0.5 mm disc ones into the ventral gun points. The cruiser/light cruiser top panel got three 2mm x 0.5mm discs to connect to the magnets in the main hull, and the heavy cruiser got a 2mm x 2mm post in both of the gun points (these are aligned so they connect the hull panel to the ship… Read more »
Nice! thanks for the detailed descriptions it helps.
Magnetizing is not that tough for UCM. I magnetizes most of my turrets so I can spin them around (I’m silly) and not to switch up ships like a reasonable person would.
What is your favourite army Dave? And are there any new armies you’d like to do for Dropzone/fleet?
I used 2mmx1mm magnets for my UCM. They fit JUST inside the stem of the main turrets and so can go flush much more easily.
it would have been nice to see a magnetizing guide for the PHR as from what I have seen they look kind of hard to do.
@tookeywhy, I’ve been using this blog as a guide for PHR cruisers:

For the Frigates, it’s really easy. The optional parts are a single undercarraige pod, though you might be better off gluing the Medea’s troop bay in place for a few ships
Not a specific fleet question, but can we have more collectors’ stuff like the amazing 30mm Ares walker?
Are the fleet cards wipe clean or do you need to put them in baggies ?
Baggies would be the way to go
Great amount of customisation and fleet choices.
What was the reaction to the banana boats?
