Well, now I have another rule set to use my FoW Great War minis with!
WWI may see some spark, maybe. FoW tried but it didn’t seem to catch on. At least not around here.
We talked a lot about this in our Top Five Tips for Gaming World War One video a while ago. A lot of WW1 games, especially “re-skinned” games from WW2 (like FoW), have established WW2 fans. These fans go to WW1. But they’re used to playing WW2, with WW2 flexibility (radios, trucks, fuel, vehicles, etc). Problem is, WW1 doesn’t have these. So WW1 rules slap a lot of extra restrictions (how arcs of fire work, how indirect fire is called in, etc). So FoW players feel straightjacketed when trying to play under realistic WW1 restrictions. I seriously love the bidding initiative system.
Having watched this a second time, I got excited at the mention of playing ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ in the Middle East region. That could be epic! At least for me, as I’ve always loved that movie and later reading about the real man and what he did during his lifetime.
He suffered a lot too from what I’ve read.

This was a 2×2. According to Rufus, normally 3×3 or slightly more.
If its got Australian Light Horse in it, I m sold! Seriously good to see a WWI rulebook look at and include alternate WWI theatres. I predict this rule book will do very well.
Yep. 1914, 1918, and other theaters outside of the Western Front offer a lot more mobility and options for WW1 wargaming.
I was also jazzed to hear the Harlem Hellfighters (US 369th Infantry) was included.
Sounds like a good system – I was worried it might just be a trench based war of attrition, but this sounds really good with lots of choices to make each turn.
This one has to go on my shopping list!

Looks awesome, thanks for taking the time to film this demo. Very excited about the game. I am hoping they have reasonably priced starter boxes so it will be easy to get my friends to sign on to play.

The initiative system is interesting. I have seen something similar but can’t remember what game it was and it was many years ago. I’d like to know if the special abilities change depending on what year the game is set? As for example there would be a massive difference in skill levels in a 1914 or 1917/18 British army to that of 1915/16 soldier on the Western Front
Great question, @torros – but I didn’t see a copy of the book so I honestly don’t know. At 5:10 he says that when it comes to these different scenarios and WW1 period, “there are historical constraints on what you can do.” So that would IMPLY that these abilities would change, at least in scenario-driven (non-tournament) games?
