Bonus Post - Anglo-Dutch Age of Sail in 1:1200
Tiller and Whipstaff is a rule set by Rod Langton for 1:1200 Naval Combat in the Age of Sail. I sat down briefly with some folks were were setting up for an Anglo-Dutch high seas throw-down!
Great looking ships!
This wasn’t even the half of their fleet. They had CASES of them! 😀
Wow! and I thought my X-Wing collection is expensive. I love those Langton ships especially the resin bases and the fact that these are rigged and have brass etched pieces these are extra special.
Wow, didn’t notice the brass. And I was sitting right there! 🙂
The Langton ships are fantastic when fully rigged up
Very friendly folks as well.
Go Dutchies! Smite those English … 😉
Thought you’d appreciate this one. 🙂
that I do 🙂
😀
Great looking ships.
Definitely!
Oh, I’ll have to look into these rules to see how they compare with Oak and Iron.
Fleets on the table top are always cool to see!
I wanted to make sure we got a representation of Naval and Air games on top of all the WW 2 skirmish and ACW battle games we’d be seeing tons of.
quick google suggests that the rules are designed for large fleet actions.
I kind of doubt Oak&Iron will be that big
Yeah, these folks had a LOT of ships. They were building up for a pretty serious fleet action.
I was one of the Dutch Commanders. I had 6 ships and easily handled them. I am a long time wargamer, but naval is not my main type of gaming. I would not have wanted 20 ships. This was my sister in law’s (Mark’s Wife) first ever wargame and she was easily able to pick up the rules. The only thing that really slows the game down at all is tracking the damage. We had a resolution to the game in under 4 hours. It could have been faster, but the convention room was loud and one of the players… Read more »
Thanks for chiming in , Jon! And welcome to OnTableTop / Beasts of War! 😀
Yeah, those rooms were very loud, there was a lot of shouting.
Thanks again for the comment!
Thanks for the kind words. That was my game, and I’ve been working on these fleets for @ 20 years. Almost all Langtons, with a couple of old Navwar models snuck in to provide bulk – they are cheap and suitable for fireships and hired merchants IMO. The ratlines are old pantyhose donated by my wife that I stretch on a frame and hit with multiple (I dunno 20? 30?) coats of spray varnish until they are stiff. I plan on doing the game again in 2020, and if I can get more players I can go much bigger. Tiller… Read more »
Thanks so much for joining the thread, Mark. And welcome to OnTableTop / Beasts of War! 😀 Those fleets really did look great. I could tell immediately the years of work that had gone into them. I was sitting at your table for a few minutes but couldn’t stay long, I was previously signed up to play another table (we work media until 5:00 or 6:00, then we’re on our own). I actually came back to Heritage Hall but it looked like your game was already in progress – So I wanted to at least feature the game with a… Read more »
