BONUS POST - Vietnam Gets Weird ...
I caught up with my friend Chip where he was slingin’ dice at the Black Sun table, the new “Weird Vietnam” game. The table was great, everyone was having fun, and some of the units were, well … interesting to say the least.
Currently on Kickstarter at the moment. I do like the Fishmen unit and the bugs they have shown but unfortunately don’t have any spare hobby budget!
The folks at the table ensured I got a shot of the monster with the rocket pack on his back.
Not sure which regiment he was with historically, but hey what do I know? 😀 😀 😀
Looks amphibious, so must be Marines 🙂
Big, green, and ugly … yep!
I’m not sure about the ‘Weird’ aspect of this. But I love seeing the Vietnam table setup.
I’m digging into ‘Flames of War-Vietnam’ right now and just getting around to the question of what to use for trees, bushes, foliage, and ect ect.
I’ll have to do a search in the ‘hobby lab archives’ to see if brother @lloyd has covered this before. No since in re-inventing the wheel if it’s been done before.
Weird War II and Vietnam … yeah … it runs the risk of hitting an awkward chord … but just for me, these kinds of games go SO far over the top that they’re self-aware and I think we can be cool with it. Iron Skies, Dust, Konflict 47, Black Sun, I think they’re pure camp and it’s all good.
It’s shows like Inglorius Basterds and Hogan’s Heroes I actually find very offensive.
Weird war yes or no, the table is quite nice and I wish I could manage to make jungle terrain like this.
Robert´s post, ever so great: Amphibious, so they must be marines. Wonderful!
The table was awesome, and who can’t like lizardmen and fishmen with AKs? 😀
Maybe the Great Laotian Truck Eater is in it
Or those “ancestral ghosts” that Army Intelligence and the CIA tried to replicate with audio recordings blaring into the jungle at night. Maybe in this world those “jungle ghosts” are not a PsyOp subversion effort – but the real thing!
The game ran nicely. I was one of the American players. I got stuck in a firefight with the fishmen. You could play the game as a straight up US and allies vs NVA and VC. I had 2 4 man fire teams and a leader. I doubt you would want to ever more than double that in a game. The rules are still a WIP but took about 15 minutes to figure out the basics. I jumped in the kickstarter even though I already have around a platoon or so on each side for the historical opponents. If played… Read more »
Thanks very much Jon for helping out with a summary after action report for this table! 😀
I’ve got about a platoon of each as well, although in 15mm.
50 US Army / USMC
50 NVA / PAVN
50 VC / NLF
+2 Marine Corps M48A3s
+4 US Army UH-1H gunships (often used as slicks)
All this was used for the 50th Anniversary article series we ran for the Tet Offensive back in January 2018.
This is a fascinating idea. I’d love to get stuck into historical Vietnam gaming at some point.
@somegeezer – Sitrep Podcast has videos up each week, and we’re focusing on the Vietnam War pretty heavily. We also run games each weekend, all you need is an internet connection if you ever want to participate or spectate live!

I agree with Jon. It did not take too long to catch on. I liked the activation system as it did not guarantee everything could activate in your turn. I was running the “Pig”. That is the Adaro with a rocket launcher strapped to it’s back. Only 3 shots but man did it do some damage. You absolutely want to use cover because just standing and duking it out is not fun. Did not get into close combat but would have liked to see it work. Great opponents and team mates. A truly good time.
@cbrenner – I’ll have to include the fish rocket trooper in our next game of Vietnam Valor & Victory. 😀
