New Two Player Starter Set Coming For Kings Of War 3rd Edition!
August 8, 2019 by brennon
A new Two-Player Starter Set is on the way from Mantic Games for those who want to dive into the new Third Edition of Kings Of War. Shadows In The North pits the forces of the Northern Alliance against the Nightstalkers.
The set comes with all of the newest goodies including some fantastic miniatures for both sides. Mantic Games already revealed what's going to be included in the set for the Northern Alliance...
- 20x Hard Plastic Clansmen
- 20x Hard Plastic Pack Hunters
- 3x PVC Plastic Snow Trolls
- PVC Plastic Ice Kin Master Hunter
...and of course for the monstrous Nightstalker have...
- 20x Hard Plastic Scarecrows
- 20x Hard Plastic Spectres
- 3x PVC Plastic Butchers
- PVC Plastic Horror
There will be a range of different options for your standard foot troops which is cool and the monstrous Butchers and Snow Trolls really help to build up hammer-blow potential of your army. As well as the miniatures you'll also find a small introductory booklet plus a mini-campaign to teach you the ropes.
Finally, you'll also get a soft-back rulebook which is cut down to 200 pages rather than the massive 400-page tome you can get in hardback. I really like the look of this and could see it being a great new set for those looking to dive into some mass battle Fantasy wargaming.
Which side would you pick?

Roll on Friday when the pre-order goes up and I’ll be in like Flynn.
I already have the start of a nightstalkers army from the last KSer and I have a chunky set of Northern Alliance for Vanguard so I’ll be grabbing both and wrapping myself for the northern winters
Is there any fantasy system you don’t have or want? 😉
I don’t want age of sigmar 😉
But I’ve been a huge fan of Kings since day one it’s a magnificent system
Sensible to have a smaller soft-backed rulebook in the starter set, should make it a very affordable boxed set.
I’m hoping for £50 like the current set, but with the additional bits in there I would still be happy enough with £60. We’ll find out tomorrow.
It will be tempting… still have unpainted Orc and Elf armies though…
ah don’t let that worry you 🙂
They don’t – it is the unpainted Abyssal’s and Forces of Nature armies that do 🙂
I’m thinking of using colour flip paints on my salamanders and niads to speed painting them
That could be a good shout! Dwarfs need finished first though. I have a lot of Badgers to get done and a spear regiment of dwarfs that have been barely started. Plus cannons and some of the Avatars of War plastic Slayers to build up into berserkers.
Wow, I love those northern alliance troops.
Nice looking starter set, massively tempted by the Northern Alliance half, not so much the other.
That’s the benefit of being able to split it with a friend 😉
Ha that’s true, brilliant way for two to get a nice starter army and get stuck into larger games.
this is very exiting !!! I JUST GOT IN TO KINGS… AND |I LOVE IT.
Love the figures pictured.
I like what I see and it tempts me.
I want the northern alliance troops for Frostgrave. Nobody in my local gaming universe play KoW. Hopefully those troops will be available separately.
I am pretty sure they will.
Try to ask someone for a game when the 3rd edition arrives. You can pretty easily use old WHF models. The game is as much epic as swift – and as tactical too! Amazing game mechanism. And the setting gets more rich and deep as well.
Frostgrave was exactly what popped into my head when I saw those troops. They’re particularly awesome because Frostgrave and Kings of War are two of my favorite games. I imagine I’ll also be able to use the Nightstalkers for Rangers of Shadow Deep as well.
Are there any further details on rules changes yet? Old system was really tight but always felt it lacked character and interraction for my tastes.
Clansman plastics look good – be interested to see the production quality.
rules changes will be minor, following the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” style of edition change. Just tightening wording, tweaking rules that have become accepted changes, like flyers losing nimble when disordered, that kind of thing I imagine
Thanks dude. Sounds its still not for me, but good to know
Yup, this looks feckin amazing.
you should have a look at the forum post for it I just added huge monster pics to the thread, they’re amazeballs
I was tempted by Vanguard KS, but wasn’t keen on starter armies. Northern Alliance looked good.
But I just bought warcry, haven’t finished paint Soul Wars and Pelennor Fields, so I’m armied out right now.
I’m not a great painter but looking at the nightstalkers imagine the amazing stuff you could do. My goal is to make them terrifying as possible
They work really good even in simple colour scheme based on one colour 😮
Northern Alliance all the way. They should work well with my Dwarves and the rest can be given to someone. Will have to order from Mantic direct though as any mention of Mantic or Warlord starts a tirade at my FLGS. Representation for both companies is quite bad within US distribution and retailers buying direct from across the pond are not getting the help and support they expect. A lot of these (Not GW) companies need to work together to get US distribution and support up to speed so that I can get the product onto the shelf of my… Read more »
Those clansmen are very shiny!
northern alliance look lovely
So I’ve been watching some kow videos and starting to get interested. I’ve no real interest in doing this in 28mm so looking at something smaller
Are there any major changes for 3rd edition in regards to rules and army lists?
rules wise tweaks, list wise, tweaks.
This looks @#!$#%^%%# incredible. The new Titan models look @#$!%$@^# incredible. Mantic have gone up a level over the last 18 months, and like @avernos come Friday I’ll be all over it like a dose of syphillis . Good times
good man
Nice Wildlings you’ve got there.
Would be a shame if someone was to STANNNIS STANNIS STANNIS
