Round Breakdown: Kings Of War Third Edition
October 17, 2019 by avernos
Rob and Matt from Mantic Games join Gerry in the studio to take him through a round of the third edition of Kings of War.
Comment Below For A Chance To Win 1 Of 2 Kings Of War Two-Player Starter Sets
Being a keen enthusiast for previous editions of Kings of War, Gerry is excited to finally get a game of this new third edition of the rank and flank game. Giving an introduction to newer players this round breakdown also highlights the subtle differences between editions and why they were implemented.
Are you excited for the third edition of Kings Of War?

Can anybody tell me if there is a difference between “rank & file” and “rank & flank”? Am I showing ignorance here against the finer distinctions of rank games? Now back to watching Lord Commander @avernos eating his enemy… or not XD
There is no differnce, These are just two different names for the same type of games.
Thank you.
Rank and File is the correct way of saying it 🙂
rank and flank for a little tank and spank ? 😉
let’s use the power of imagination to see this roll – Ryan 2019
Thinking about dice rolls is always better than seeing them – priceless ?
Did I understand that coorectly, that the range for shooting is now measured between the closest points of shooting and target unit (as it is for charges)?
Yup all measurements are closest points as far as I recall. I shall double check this evening and let you know
Think this is the first time I’ve ever seen Gerry win a game of KoW, look at his little smug-face :D. Really looking forward to getting stuck into 3rd Edition.
Unfortunately his Fire Elementals burnt my Undead to a crisp so I have seen the smug little look before!
I’ve won plenty. You just weren’t around and so wouldn’t know.
Nice overview, it still looks like Kings of War and the tweaks to the rules seem to make it flow better. I like the idea of staying combat, how the old bounce rule was it seemed disjointed. I look forward to seeing the guys play through a game.
Next week is a proper game. Not a full huge armies game. I think 800pts as a demonstration game where you can see Matt teach Rob how to play.
it should add another tactical dimension to the game play i think, if you choose to disengage you may be able to fresh charge another unit instead. tall units like giants will be nasty.
there was so many games when we forgot to do bounce move this make more sense.
Poor Dwarfs, beer fest ruined, but the Brock and Rock will soon sort those Ogres out!
I’ve always been impressed by the solid mechanics of KoW. I’m a historical wargamer first and foremost but mass fantasy battles also has a place near my heart.
Some changes came from the historical version Into this edition.
I know historical got panned for the lists, which is a shame because as an old player I would do the research and use that to build the list and in that respect it was fine…but that’s another story, but the game underpinning it is a very good ruleset and some of the tweaks make it a valid choice for historic and fantasy.
I’m planning on using it with 20mm armies to introduce people to ancients via the backdoor
Ah yes, God’s scale for wargaming! I have plenty of 20mm stuff to play modern, WWII, medieval, and dark ages!
Or paper armies
As I do have the impression KoW is easy to understand and intuitive, and that it is comfortably managed with only a few stat cards on the board I will order a rulebook as oon as my dealer got it in stock. Thank you for this Video, my decision is partly based on this. Questions: 1.) The “Unnamed Empire” book (I mean the book with the other army lists): Is this compatible with the 3rd edition rulebook? 2.) Are the stat cards handmade, readymade or can they be downloaded from the Mantic website? 3.) Are Negan´s Saviours going to be… Read more »
1) unchartered empire has been written for third so it is completely compatible
2) they were printed from the pdf and cut out. Bit easyarmy.com will be posting the army lists early next year I believe. So it’s an army builder that allows you to save and print lists if you’ve not seen it before. Because it is free it’s not going to be updated at launch. But it will be the go to after that.
3) when armies of pannithor comes out stick Negan’s Saviours on movement trays and run them as kingdoms of men ?
my undead zombies are wrom waling dead. I even use one with contamination suits 😀 ( I have them painted black and white – comics way)
Looking forward to KoW3. Going to do a Brotherhood army with some old GW Bretonnians.
That was interesting
Be interesting to see if the old GW campaign packs could be played using KoW
which ones?
@avernos Mc Death was always a favourite
you could, but you’d need to do a lot of work since individual figures aren’t removed so kill points would have to be changed and things like that
I’m sure that wouldnt be too difficult to work out. Might need to put a limit on units allowed in regards to size of units
probably a combination of vanguard and KoW depending on the scenario would work best
I’m also waiting for the new edition. I’m from Germany, so I will have to wait a few days more to get the book, but it’s already pre-ordered, so in November it’s getting started!
Announced a little while ago that they are shipping to stockists and trade accounts tomorrow 3 days earlier than planned so everyone should have it by Friday 26th hopefully
I’am form Spain, and I’am happy because it’s going to be translate to Spanish, wich is a great notice because it’s hard to introduce games only in English here. I think KoW it’s the best game of ranks and files in the Market without doubt, and I discover it thank to GW kill Warhammer ;). It’s hard to form comunnity here but I hope to fool somemore players to play and enjoy this great game. I think it’s a little shame too many players don’t want to try KoW because it’s not GW, and they are nostalgic of Warhammer, because… Read more »
Did you see the Spainish team kicked ass at the recent Clash of Kings tournament and the overall winner is Spainish. Some fantastic players there in Spain.
I am very happily looking forward to playing my first own game of V3 🙂
Thinking about dice rolls is always better than seeing them – priceless 😀
what did I do… more importantly what did Ryan do?
Thres a bit where none of the dice rolling is on camera
only one bit?
I count that as a total win
It didnt seem a very important bit either
Have got the new book on order and I’m expecting it to be good. Currently working on a new Goblin Army and also looking forward to tweaking my Dwarfs and Trident Realms for the new edition. Pleased OnTableTop/Beasts of War is covering Kings of War and I think Gerry was a good choice to do the Kings of War videos.
I will be briefly talking about my Trident Realms army build on Sunday
Wait a minute… Bounce has gone? I’m in! I never understood what the bounce rule was all about
I kinda miss bounce sticks
“Are you excited for the third edition of Kings Of War?”
Definitely. But also I’m definitely still traumatized about what has happened the last time I was excited for a new edition of my (at that time) favorite Tabletop Game xD
that was a nice informative game folks.
I joined for Kings of War content! Hope that we get to see more KOW videos soon!
Ok so watched about the first 5 mins of the video and its clear that you need some kind of knowledge about war gaming and it would help to know something about KoW. Not the best at explaining what things are or what they are doing, of course might get better as I watch the rest but not impressed yet. I am interested in starting playing KoW and have played 40k for many years. Finally realized that GW have little interest in making a balanced game, so was looking at something completely different, KoW. Unit sizes, regiment, hordes?? I can… Read more »
You are absolutely correct about the rant.
The video is directed for people with knowledge of the game, it make a poor example for new people.
If you search for Kings of War on here or youtube there are some Beasts of War introductory videos for 2nd edition with Justin which will give you a good idea.
I been on and of thinking about trying this game for a while. The two armies that do interest me the most are in this box set.
I have my copy on advanced order and cannot wait to get my hands on it. The new figures for the northern alliance look great.
I cant wait for KOW 3rd edition
Rules seem more streamlined. Should play better
