Getting Started With Kings Of War
October 16, 2019 by avernos
Matt and Rob from Mantic Games are in the studio to talk about how new players might get started with Kings of War.
Comment Below For A Chance To Win One Of Two Kings Of War Starter Sets!
Gerry talks to the guys from Mantic for those who might not know where to start if they feel like dipping their toe into rank and flank games. A good first step though is in the new edition of the Kings of War rulebook which contains everything you might need from army lists to narrative information.
Which of your armies would you like to convert to play Kings of War with?

Are there suggestions in the new book to converting the base sizes for using smaller scales?
Nope. But then it’s written for 28mm.
For 20mm I didn’t convert it at all and do just stuck a fuck load more men onto the base. I found 35 to 40 men could fill 20 man base
A conversion system was outlined in the KoW Historical supplement – that being said its not particularly difficult to convert, there aren’t that many ways! There is a template for working with 10mm and 3×2 areas. Also there is quite a bit online. The two things to consider are do you just want a smaller footprint playing area or to play on a massive scale – so keep 6X4 but convert the bases. The way I am working towards is for 15mm simply go for half the base sizes and work with cm for distance. As far as I can… Read more »
Currently I have about 2000 points of Undead painted, and just over 1000 points of Dwarfs finished. Goal is to balance my Undead as it is Skeleton heavy and get more shooty boys for the Dwarfs so I can have a gun line. Then I might start thinking about getting the Orcs and Goblins I have painted up and maybe some naughty Dwarfs!
Got cannons?
Lots, but only one Cannon and one Organ gun painted so far. Have a bombard sitting ready to get built, plus two boxes of sharp shooters 🙂
add mummies , they amazing
Not a fan of Mantic’s mummies. I want something that looks like the mummies in the old Heroquest! Suggestions on a postcard, please.
@robert Bit expensive and only one pose

Cheers @torros still probably cheaper than buying old heroquest ones! I have a few suitable ones already, just need a few more to make the base up.
remind me for months constantly and I may be able to help you out

Those are nice. Don’t worry, I will constantly annoy you!
Riders of Rohan from Pelennor fields might be a nice army to convert.
I almost backed Vanguard ks, but talked myself out of it. The Northern Alliance did look good though, probably would have back that if they were in two player starter.
Loving the look of the North men, really interested in what third edition has to offer.
This looks interesting, might have to dust off my old Dwarf army for this. Also have all my Dungeon Saga minis, which I assume can be used.
yes, get them all out and on the table
cant wait. Forces of nature for my offspring and undead for me please.
Looking forward to seeing the updates for the game and my abyssal army, added molochs and abyssal fiend for Clash of Kings tournament so they are ready to go.
I always took the Molochs even though they were sub par so I like the bump they got Speed 6 yaaaaay
It’s a shame they lost some attacks, i like having an army that rolls lots of dice. But they certainly hit a bit harder now.
And the waiver bump is good as well.
interesting that the game can be up scaled to field mass armies
I have a some Wildlings for CMON’s A Song of Ice and Fire, which would work perfectly for the Northern Allaince.
The re-purposing issue is clearly aimed at people with their beloved armies from Warhammer Fantasy Battles. I wanted to continue WHFB, but then a flood set my cellar underwater and all my army books fell prey to that. With one KoW book covering 14 armies, and two even 26, I do not have to repurchase all of the beautiful old GW army books, I consider getting the KoW books. And keep them out of the cellar. What I do hope is that many people get stuck into KoW so that we can find as many opponents as we wish. And… Read more »
there was and will be again a historic version. If you plan on getting the fantasy version the Kingdoms of Men list is flexible enough to build everything from biblical chariot forces up to pike and shotte or even horse and musket lists. So you could work on that list to run your current historics as well
Since I like the pike and shotte era, especially 30 yrs. war (Living where the action was, roundabout, a Swedish camp just 35 from here), that is extremely good news. Thanks for the info.
I’m in the process of converting multiple armies to KoW. I’m currently working on all my skaven so I can have a ratkin army
my ratkin are in a similar place, waiting to get off small bases and onto huge ones
Iam so damn hyped for KoW 3rd edition! Can’t wait until it drops next monday!!!
Please keep up the great video footage and i hope to see some gameplay also from you guys!? 🙂
went up today, although it’s a brief round breakdown so only 45mins, but shows off some changes
Can’t wait for it to drop. more videos are always welcome! 😉 I think I might expand my Northern Alliance from Vanguard…

Convert the bases but keep the 6×4 or preferably the 8×5
I
d like to see an army of wolf-men (good or bad), fully fluffed out, like the Wolfen of Yllia for Confrontation at their time.
Apart of that, I think Ill start nightstalkers and Basilea next year.
I have all my Rackham Wolfen waiting, they can be run as undead force or as forces of nature and so play differently
Excellent looking forward to 3rd ed and redoing my Empire of Dust army and adding a Legion Of Chariots !!
While I don’t see an Army Scale game in my future I really do love the work this team is putting in. Is there any hope of increased distribution in the US? Nobody within a reasonable area stocks any Mantic and the international shipping is a bit brutal.
As far as i know they have US sales reps might be worth sending them an email to see who holds stock near you
yup poke Kyle with sticks
I’d love to see more focus on historical. the system is great for that
very tempted to pick up this set looks like great value for money
My god, I cant wait for the release! Northern alliance looks like a great faction to play
Based on what I’ve seen previewed so far I’m going to have to have another look at my Abyssal Dwarves once the book turns up. I’ve been wanting to have another crack at the basing anyway. I’ll most likely finally get around to multi basing my old orcs as well I guess, they’ve been sitting for the last 15 odd years doing nothing might get them back on the table.
Was nice to see that they let Ogres get some air (not sure about sun in Northern Ireland) in the round summary in the next video. Two other comments: Lose the Star Wars death-ray cannon microphones with complimentary spit-screens. This is video, not radio, so don’t cover the faces of your guests. Maybe use stands with wand mics. Although, I’ve never had any problem hearing you guys when you used the lapel versions. And, what’s with the headphones? Translations? Is the studio so loud that you can’t hear someone in the same room? Listening to the horse races or cricket… Read more »
Never heard of the game. Looks interesting.
I am so excited for this edition, the gameplay is great and the sculpts are awesome
I’ve got some Forest Goblns coming from the Shieldwolf which would be a good first conversion candidate.
