First off – that’s an epic t-shirt and I want it lol. Love DKH and can’t wait to get my hands on this.
these sets look like a ton of fun 🙂 what im mostly wondering is, does the game include random event cards or the like to make it interesting outside of pure combat? The crumbling roof sounds like an interesting bit for example
DKH doesn’t have random events at the moment as part of the challenge is the fine balance of the scenarios. Randomness is fine in games, you just have to decide how much.
it’s the kind of thing that we could add in time if we felt it appropriate or if loads of people really wanted it. Not currently planned though.
I am definitely getting more interested in these games the more videos I see.
I’d definitely like to hear more on what will be coming later for the Dwarf King’s Hold series. I heard this was discussed at the Open Day, but I’d be excited to hear Jake recap his plans.
Ronnie and I did indeed talk about this at some length. It was even recorded, but for some reason it isn’t usable 🙁
I wish DKH rules were available for free… to make sure they suit me.
for now try watching the actual play vids (just pretend Andy is trying to lose by not using shield bash)

upload it already guys 😉
Agreed. I’m looking forward to the upcoming scenario download, just to get a sense of how the rules look on paper.
I’ll have to start selling blood, not mine of course, to afford all these wonderful items Mantic is producing.
Mantic are branching out. I didn’t realise they accepted blood as well as credit cards.
I’m looking forward to try the Green Menace! and too the next set!
Happy to hear it 🙂
This sounds a lot more to my liking than the first game.
Not that the first game seemed bad it’s just that slow armoured dwarves vs slow resilient skeletons seemed to sound a little lacking to me, of course thinking about it I am sure the scenarios are designed so that it is all taken into account and movement is still tactical.
Green Menace though appeals a lot more straight off with all the potential for fast tactical movement and such.
Ye of little faith!
“a little lacking”! Heavens, Sir, I shall see you at dawn. Swords or pistols?
Seriously though, it’s a fair point.. It *could* have been dull and rubbish. But it wasn’t 😉
I wrote a review of the original DKH:DR here:

and I’ve just been putting the finishing touches to an article reviewing the game 2 months after getting it which can be found here:

suffice to say I’m still enjoying it and finding it still has a lot to offer as you start to learn the game a bit more and just how important positioning is. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on Green Menace now.
There is a great deal of replayability in Dwarf King’s Hold, and it’s not just me that says so. The dynamic which develops between gamers who regularly play DKH against each other is really interesting. Because the games take an hour or less to play (even for the biggest one), you can get several scenarios in during a gaming session. This means you can see your tactics evolve in a single evening, try out different ploys, and generally have fun in a sort of meta game sense as well as on the board. * more of Jake’s musings on games… Read more »
@sirangry
Loved the 2 reviews. In fact your blog mad me a sad panda as its awesome- i feel all inadequate
as a totally off topic comment I think your comments re Warpath/40k etc really hit the nail on the head re why Im not 100% sold on them. Future war is skirmish or big scary mass battles where infantry better hide real good
@Quirkworthy, totally agree I have two regular opponents and both have developed very different styles and tactics and both have seriously affected how I now approach the game. I also recently played a friend who I didn’t know owned the game for the first time and he’s probably had WAY more play time than me from what he was saying and genuinely he came at it with a third style… argghhhhh and bettered me a little bit in our first two games. I eventually got the upper hand though and did him 3 games to 2, like Rafa Nadals epic… Read more »
What I’ve been really pleased with is that people are evolving tactics that I hadn’t envisaged when I originally wrote it, but they’re still all working within the system and are pretty balanced. So far, every time someone has said they have found an unstoppable strategy I’ve seen it crushed a game or two later 🙂
The (tactical) “arms race” seems to be never ending!
@quirkworthy you should be very proud of what you’ve achieved with DKH. I mean that genuinely, if I thought the game was poor I’d say and I wouldn’t care who read it. However I can genuinely say that DKH has produced some of my most fun gaming memories of the past year so kudos to you. I would wholeheartedly recommend people giving it a go because its a really cool little gem of a game and despite the easy to learn rules there IS a tactical depth to it and trust me I’ve been well and truly ‘schooled’ a few… Read more »
Thanks @sirangry. I am proud of it. Very nice to see it in print and out in the big wide world on its own, making friends and entertaining folk.
i see my post went to the wrong bit…oh well.
DKH2 looks nice
I was expecting dwarves to lose after Andy failed to remember the rules in the video demo 😉 first game they crushed the skellies and all of them still alive to tell the tale…getting back out might have been difficult mind
Im gonna try and play more dkh1- having trouble getting together with board game group. Doesnt help when they move away or have babies
People will do stuff like that. If it helps, try to think of it as creating the next generation of gamers.
