Conquering Kings of War – How 2nd Edition Rules Effect The Game
June 12, 2015 by dignity
Welcome to our new series where Justin is joined by Rich from Mantic Games to help us get into Kings of War. In this episode they discuss the changes the 2nd Edition rules brings to the game.
The great thing about this game is that the rules and army lists are free to access so you can start playing with no cost as long as you have a bunch of models!

Serieses? 🙂 Great show though!
Kings of War has a lot to recommend it but I have some issues that jar with me and provide a personal disconnect while gaming – doesn’t look like 2nd ed has fixed those
thats a pity, you could always house rule the problems if they aren’t that large I guess. Personally I love it, you really do get to have massive games (2500) in 2 or so hours without consulting the rulebook constantly. That was for me the biggest selling point of the game.
My dislikes are a personal thing – firstly its incredibly passive as the non-active player, I have found you could quite happily leave the table and it has no effect, and that is from a I go you go style of game comparison. Secondly the unable to engage more than one unit, understand it is kept clean but I find that breaks the immersion and has in my limited experience lead to some gamey interractions. Warhammer falls down for me because by unit selection and tactics there are a number of gamey mechanics – and the best players I feel… Read more »
Although I like the odd game of KOW I have the same problems with its lack of interaction. I find myself going towards Warband from Pendraken instead
Will have a look at that @torros I have been looking for a mass battle system as fantasy for all its flaws was my fix. Was thinking on working on a re-skin for war of the ring with a re-touch for the mechanics
In my head there is that game that goes a bit like the x-wing order thing…each player gives all his units commands in secret…and both player play those out on the field in initative order…do you by chance know a game system that has something like it?
Can you recommend any articles or reviews about Warband @torros ? I’d be interested in playing a 10mm fantasy game but am finding it hard to find out much about these rules, even on Pendraken’s own website!
Hey @dags,
Some good reasoning there, I understand what you mean by being passive when it is not your turn as your opponent does all the rolls. I find it helps with timed/tournament play and stops time wasting. You can always house rule as @kharegim said.
Again, I see your point on the multiple charge issue, however I’ve found it forces some tactical planning which, for me is what I love about KoW.
Have you tried the 2nd edition rules to play yet?
@gingerrich I have not played 2nd ed but in honesty I don’t see the reason too, what I like will still be positive what I dislike won’t. I appreciate the speeding things up for tournament play but I am not a huge fan of tournament play and if I do mass battle is not a system I think it works with. I did play and run tournaments for warhammer when GW promoted tournament play (If they say its always been about the narrative they are lying) and it greatly diminished my enjoyment of mass battle games. As to the tactical… Read more »

Not sure why I cannot reply to your comment…
I’ve not played Warmachine yet, heard very good things about it and I may well try it out at some point when funds allow.
KoW2 is sounding awesome. I love 1st ed. But the changes all sound like improvements to me.
Streamlined, balanced, enjoyable and affordable the only commercial mass battle fantasy game you need. Sorry GW love your worlds & history but looks like your going in the wrong direction for me.
Good show Justin, Like the idea of it easy rules, group bases no time moving large formations after DS comes out I may go for it. thanks and have a grand day you’ll.
I can’t wait… It’s a great game.
Just had my first two games of 2nd edition and I really like the flow of the game. Flank and rear charges pays off and no “making way super character” who just chops down all my flankers! You also don´t just face an army with one deathstars and just a lot of redirectors. However the minis are just to limited in their poses to make them look like “my” army. They all look the same. the´ve made the right choices with the rules but not with their minis.
@tenntrollet It’s the compromise we have to make to keep the costs down.
As you can use any manufacturers models in Kings of War, even in the official tournaments you could always use the Mantic models as the bulk and have your front rank made up of another companies models to give it the personal character you might be looking for.
Played our first game last weekend, just a small 600pt between my 10 yr old son & I -we both loved it, i got annihilated but we had great fun, easy to learn rules with enough tactics available to keep it interesting. Cant wait until the preorder V2 arrives 🙂
@torkijo Glad you enjoyed it..not long till the KS shipping starts if you got in on that.
I really want to see that. I hope the 2nd edition will be available in NZ soon!
Can’t wait for my KoW2 tome to arrive in NZ also , great game!
