The Abyssal Fiend Takes Form For Kings Of War
August 7, 2015 by brennon
Kings Of War is getting fiery and sort of apocalyptic with the coming of the Abyssal Fiend from Mantic Games soon made of resin to capture all those facets of darkness. See what you think of the render below...
This monstrous beast stands taller than the existing Obsidian Golem and is decidedly more beefy. I'm quite a fan of most of the model, including the flames around the fists, but I'm not sure on the face. I think I might end up swapping the head out for something else.
Otherwise I think the Abyssals have got something very fun to look forward to soon.
Do you mind the face?

That looks pretty good. I actually don’t mind the face. It is a little over the top. I would think about this as an army if I decide to get into Kings of War.
I really like the 2 soldiers on the right, definitely a must buy for me!
the two on the right are the hero level demons, they’ll be appearing first in Dungeon Saga and then we’ll get them for KoW Abyssals around October I think.
That is rather impressive looking big demon.
Agreed. The face is a showstopper for me. I like the soldiers, though!
A little cartoony but I like them
I quite like t, but may have to use something other than a flaming hand as it reminds me of one of the Reaper Bones Demons and just don’t fancy fielding two bosses that are that similar.
The two soldiers to the right are Abyssal Champions iirc.
Face = Amazing! Like that it does look very mad but having tons of fun at the same time. Glad to see them doing big models and looking forward to see more of that each week.
Oh dear. Another bad sculpt from Mantic. Looks like it was sculpted by an ametuer.
I was thinking the same but was afraid to write it
Even as a Kings of War apologist, I have to agree. The larger miniatures, especially, should be advertisements that make people want to buy and play Kings of War.
That said, maybe the limitations of Mantic’s production process dictates the level of detail in their sculpts.
I think this cost me $25 on kickstarter, so glad I did it, this is a really imposing model and although I’m not sure I want to get into KoW just yet I got a few of the character models to add a bit of spice to my upcoming DS games when it arrives.
It’s a good model. But I do think that Mantic needs to spend more time on the concept stage; this is a very standard demon (the wings are a tired old cliche), and where it is unique isn’t the best part of the model. It just feels like Warhammer from 1995. I understand they like to be a little simple and approachable with their designs, but it doesn’t have to be horror to be menacing. An image search for “demon” returns much more interesting designs.
I like it except the head. That said I was pondering going another manufaturer route for my Abyssal Fiend.
Mantic could be so good, but they just keep missing the mark by going too far into cartoon style.
It’s the difference between a model I can take seriously and something I could find in the toy section at K-mart.
It’s a fine line, which unfortunately they seem to cross too often.
I think the vibe was to go for dark ages drawings of demons, maybe thats why they look a bit like that? not sure to be honest,
The soldiers look very cool, not too hooked on the fiends head and legs though .. all the weird looking bits become even more apparent with a mini this size.
I think the figure to beat, in terms of aesthetic and price, has to be the Mom Miniatures demon, at only 40 euros. He stands 17cm tall, so is similar in terms of size.
Great baddie – will look awesome towering above 200 of it’s minions as the storm across the field. Big thumbs up.
