Check Out Sci-Fi Western Star Scrappers: Battledrill
August 5, 2020 by brennon
Hexy Studio are back on Kickstarter with their entirely 3D Printable skirmish game with a Sci-Fi Western flavour, Star Scrappers: Battledrill. The miniatures for this are looking pretty snazzy and something a bit different from the norm.

Here is a quick lowdown of what Star Scrappers: Battledrill is all about...
"Battledrill is a fast-paced skirmish miniature game set in the Star Scrappers Universe, where you take control of a crew of adventurers called Scrappers. These brave humans, unyielding robots and mysterious aliens are exploring the uncharted space of the Distant Edge in search of the ultimate prize - Hexis crystals - a power source that will change the image of space travel forever. In hostile places on primeval planets, where a lasergun in your holster is the only law, will you be the one who prevails and claims all the glory?"
The game, as mentioned above, is entirely 3D Printable so there are no physical rewards associated with the campaign. There are four different factions that you can choose from as part of the Core Set which have very different aesthetics so there should be something for you.

The Terrons have that very Wild-West-But-In-Space feel to them which is very cool but then you get very Sci-Fi and alien with the rest of the factions. I like that the Minegglers have this connection their style to the earth and rock which seems to match nicely to the idea of exploring the galaxy and trying to take its resources. It seems apt that the environment and its people would want to fight back!
If these miniatures appeal to you then you can actually try their free model at home on your 3D Printing. You can snag Bioss - Equalizer from their digital webstore and maybe show us the results when you've spent some time fiddling with the file.
Star Scrappers: Battledrill Rules & Gameplay
When it comes to gaming in Star Scrappers: Battledrill, the game follows some simple concepts. You'll make a team of between three and six miniatures and then duke it out with your opponent gaining victory points for slaying your foes and getting the precious Hexis to your deployment zones.

All of the gameplay is ruled by cards and dice and they have tried to make it, as the saying goes, easy-to-learn but with plenty of depth. If the game interests you then you can right now download some elements of the game...

This means you can dive in and give the game a go before you consider pledging for the files and getting them ready to print. It's always good to see companies putting this stuff out there ahead of time so people can get a better idea of what they're pledging for.
Star Scrappers: Battledrill Stretch Goals
When it comes to unlocking more for this campaign, two have already been busted and there is a third on the way.

Carbon Linebreaker Stretch Goal // Hexy Studio
Neuroslave Curator Stretch Goal // Hexy Studio
More is undoubtedly on the way so make sure to keep an eye out to see what else the team at Hexy have up their sleeves. If the miniatures print out nice and easily and the game flows, I could see this being a good investment for someone who wants to try out a different style of skirmish game and try their hand at 3D Printing at the same time.
Are you tempted?

To be honest, my first thought was Slug Terra.
?Bit after my time that but have nephews who watched that. I was a 80s child – Gijoe, HEman, Transformers and Jason and the Wheel Warriors, the golden Age that ended with Teen age mutant hero’s and the animated X men and Batman Cartoons….ahhh Saturday morning tv shows
So they only supply 3D files. I can see the reason but I just though of a potential downfall. Imagine this: there is a very ambitious and enthusiastic young person loving this game. But he’s also impatient, so he prints the minis “quick and dirty”. And with these minis he’s trying to convince other people to jump on board. Would that still attract people? Or would it scare people away because the prints are horrible to look at? I think that’s part of the development in 3D printing we need to keep an eye one.
I was all ready to say these miniatures look fantastic and I love what they’re going for…and then I read it’s all 3D-printed, and my opinions did a 180. I know a lot of companies are doing this so that backers and supporters can make as many minis as they want at home, but not everyone can shill out hundreds if not thousands of dollars for a 3D printer that can make minis that look this good, and even a bog-standard one that makes minis so ugly and full of layer lines will still set you back a ways. The renders look great, sadly I don’t own a 3D Printer.
they do look good but i dont have a 3D printer, bugger it.
I like the idea of printing the game myself. Recently bought a Creality LD-002R. But by not offering anything physical they are limiting their potential customers.
Most people doesn’t own a resin printer, and a fdm printer wont do the minis very well. But I do hope to see more companies offering stl files for their games as an alternative to actual Miniatures. Resin printer have dropped alot in price, and eventually the market for stl files will become to big to ignore. I expect that most companies except GW will recognize this within a few years
