CMON Announce A Song Of Ice And Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game!
March 15, 2017 by deltagamegirl22
CoolMiniOrNot had a mega awesome announcement at GAMA for fans of Game of Thrones (like this girl!). Cue theme music...
CMON will be partnering with Dark Sword Miniatures to bring to life, A Song Of Ice And Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game! That's right, the beloved story from George R.R. Martin will come to table as we get a chance to play some of our most loved (or hated) characters from the Game of Thrones.
Update: Some miniature previews popped up showing off the Stark & Lannister Troops...
...as well as the character cards for the different leaders AND the faction troops. Everything seems to be of a very nice quality at this early stage, even with prototypes and the card art is great.
Hopefully, we'll learn more about the game mechanics in the near future.
Dark Sword Partnership & Kickstarter
A Song Of Ice And Fire will be making it's way to Kickstarter in the 3rd quarter of 2017 and retail stores in 2018.
A Song of Ice and Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game lets players take control of their favourite Houses from the novels, represented by trays of high-quality, pre-assembled miniatures, and lead them into battle against their opponents. Players can recreate their favourite moments from the series or create their own stories.
What if the Red Wedding never happened (if only!), and Robb Stark assaulted King’s Landing? Now fans can find out in the starter set including the Starks and Lannisters, which means there's plenty more where that came from!
Knowing that Dark Sword Miniatures has a stunning line of pewter GoT miniatures, I cannot wait to see what they can bring to the box in plastic (pictures of minis shown here are from the George R.R. Martin Masterworks line from Dark Sword)!
On top of the completely awesome theme, I think one of the best parts of this news is the variety in the way the game can be played. Battles can range from large-scale wars with hundreds of miniatures, to simple skirmishes between a few units without complicating the elegantly designed rules.
The game features several unique systems, including alternating activations that keep the players engaged; a Rank System that changes a unit’s capabilities as the battle rages on; a Tactics System that provides strategic powers fueled by a finite resource each round; and, most importantly, the iconic Heroes, such as Robb Stark and Jaime Lannister, that can change the course of war both on and off the battlefield.
What alternate outcome will you create with A Song Of Ice And Fire?

my alternative outcome would be to actually finish the books. seriously though it looks like one that will make a lot of people happy and game of thrones really deserves a miniatures game. dark sword are a safe pair of hand but I panic every time I hear preassembled, tell me these aren’t soft plastic, it would be a travesty to see ranks of bendy spears for a setting that deserves more. really enjoyed the books, never watched the tv series but am looking forward to seeing if they can produce something worthy of the setting. the game really needs… Read more »
One reason why I havnt read the books, I want it complete before I invest in the set, too jaded with the posthumous efforts for dune and wheel of time.
If CMON is using their plastics they used on Zombicide Black Plague, the minis should be alright. It’s a much more firm plastic that has some density to it so it’s not very bendy. Sometimes the weapons can have a slight bend to them, but it’s easily remedied with a hot water dip, and they should be fine from there on out. I even drew blood from my finger by accidentally stabbing myself with an Elf warrior’s sword from the Base box. I think it’ll be ok.
Yep I saw the article tag and am playing this. No brainer. Now I will read the article. I already am working on a Lannister army already 🙂
“The King of the North!”
That’ll be another KS I’ll be backing 😎
Dark sword minis, yes please
SoFaI, yes please
Hurt it will cause my wallet. … damn

That scene was one of the most uncomfortable things I have ever seen on the TV.
A friend of mine texted me at about 2.30am the same night saying “I can’t sleep”
Horrible!
Wonder what the final funding amount will be, think its safe to guess it will break the 10 million carrier?
Barrier damn you autocorrect
Might be interested if it were the TV series look, rather than generic fantasy or you might as well use any old models.
There be Dragons!
sorry @redben mate I was agreeing with what you said I was just using the games you listed to highlight that given the right level of quality that it could potentially top $10 million. it would need a resin option and a boat load of expansions to pull it off though. wishful thinking on my part mind as i think everyone should offer highend minis as an optional extra. i think your right though it would break the pattern of CMON to do so and it’s not like they don’t have a winning formula. 🙂
I see 🙂
I’m happy to proven wrong (if for no other reason that all the stretch goal freebies that would be unlocked lol), but if it has KDM levels of buy-in I can’t see many people wanting to drop hundreds (or even over a grand) to be able to play it, and if it has usual CMON levels I don’t see it getting 50,000+ backers for no other reason than no big box game gets that many backers. It could easily do millions if the product is right and the campaign structure is right.
I don’t feel like playing the scenario “Wedding at The Twins”
Tabletop battle game, with Eric designing, Darksword minis and game of thrones setting, sold.
I’m a bit confused by the relationship between DS and CMON and how it’ll affect the minis. They’re billing it as pre-assembled plastic, which suggests all new minis to me.
It does but one of the plastic looks spot on for darkswords Mountain, so seems promising in terms of conversion to plastic.
In any case it suggest awesome minis!
I’d assume that if Dark Sword already have a license to produce GoT minis, they need to be included in the project somewhere for it to even get off the ground. New plastic sculpts are probably a given though – unlikely that many of the metals will be suitable for 1 piece plastic casting straight off the bat.
Some serious talent involved in this (Inc Eric Lang, seminal games designer) and the publishing muscle of CMoN. This has the potential to be massive, and more importantly high quality.
so if this is based on the TV show half the game will be humping then?
It’s based on the books.
good.
I am very excited to see this and we will be backing. I will be speaking to Dave Taylor, Bryan Steele and the rest of the CMON crew next week and we promise to share it all with you.
Can you ask if there will be dice rolling and if so how heavy it will be?
This could be a huge success if they move away from dice mechanic and into the card hand mechanic. My gaming community refuses to play dice games. The card mechanic can be seen in GOT board game; battle of air, land, and sea; etc.
CMON have confirmed that the KS will only be for the two core box factions. Any other factions will be later and in retail only.
Yawn. Yawn. Meh.
I mean. Yay! Another CMON, cash grab, KS, erm. licensed, erm ….
Sorry no way for me to find anything positive to say about this one.
To each their own if this excites you, awesome, have fun with minis … to that I can cheer and find no fault in (all snark aside)!!
I’m with you. CMON have just posted the latest update for Rising Sun (currently over $2.2million). The stretch goal is $120K for a single mini. Lots of comments where people are super excited by that. All I see is a greedy company that is starting to take the michael.
@bigfatfred
It’s not just for that mini. It has to pay for every previous freebie for the thousand or so new backers that come on board to be able to meet the goal. This why the gaps get wider the higher the funding gets.
All stark aside?
Non-combat characters such as Cersei and Varys will be in the game and will have minis, but will have dashboards that allow them to affect the battle from the sidelines by intriguing and whatnot.
Sounds great, one of the most interesting elements of the storyline is the intrigue and backstabbing!
Now I demand a Hodor miniature that, when placed in a narrow mountain pass or defile, can hold up the movement of the enemy for one turn.
So excited for this to launch. The fact that they are calling this ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ already is a huge plus for me. The books are much more violent than the show btw, heh.
Sounds good to me.
Wow, those prototypes and cards look super fine. The whole thing feels very elegant and mature. Well done guys, can’t wait!
So glad to hear that Dark Sword are part of this. CMON and Darksword will do some really nice things together, I’m sure.
the sculpts look pretty good, still yet to be convinced by soft plastic, i’m starting to sound like a broken record with regards to that and it doesn’t seem to bother most folks. the art does look good and non combatants influencing the battles is excellent new.
Out of interest, have you seen some of the Zombiecide: Black Plague and Conan miniatures up close? (And by that I mean with the naked eye)
in fairness no, but i have heard Conan suffers with the bendy weapon thing that bloodrage did. Monolith themselves have changed to hard plastic for the weapons with mythic battles on the back of conan.
i do have some sodapop stuff that has this issue.
to be honest the detail on some of the soft plastics is getting really good and the gap is getting smaller all the time, it’s just personally the one thing that has come with the rise of boardgames that doesn’t work for me, yet.
I’m not trying to intentionally obtuse, but who is the target audience for this game? It looks a lot like WFB but with set “X+ to hit” and “X+ to defend” systems, a la Kings of War. Old WFB players have moved on to alternate systems and the amount of investment needed to really play a mass battle/rank and file game I think would eliminate the casual wargamer. It’s basically medieval human force vs identical medieval human force with a different shield logo (pics show the House symbols molded on to the shields so that your rank and file are… Read more »
