I deeply resent the implication that I, as a person who gets this, am in fact some sort of old fart and therefore can be targeted and used as the basis of humor for the gratification of other, all be it younger, people. If you were here now Caesar I would give you a sound thrashing with my walking stick!
Not even 40 and I get it. I still think Mr Ben had a particularly strange life – got dressed to go to work every day but never turned up only to have a magic adventure through the wonders of a costume shop.
I think it’s a metaphor for the dangers of drug abuse or something. Cos there’s no way he had a job anymore after the first couple of episodes. Can you imagine the back to work interview?
I would not be in the slightest bit surprised if there were an underlying drug thing in Mr Ben especially after the Magic Roundabout (and even Rainbow) etc
Well it was the 70’s…it was a cultural norm at the time.
But since you’ve decided to introduce more sinister components into this conversation, dare I mention Captain Pugwash….now that was morally questionable on so many levels.
found this to disprove the associated misnomers from Captain Pugwash (mostly cos I couldn’t remember the actual character names without looking it up.) The British Captain Pugwash animated television series, which originally aired on the BBC between 1958 and 1967, is widely believed to have featured characters with risqué maritime names such as Master Bates, Seaman Staines, and Roger the Cabin Boy. In fact, the crew of the famous Black Pig ship included sailors with no such names. Present on board were Master Mate, Tom the Cabin Boy, and Pirates Barnabas and Willy. 39 and get it. What is most shocking is when you find out how many episodes there actually were. Pretty sure I watched it every day for months and appeared not to notice the duplication!
Okay in 1970 I was the right age to watch this …. I guess this is one of the programs that the ABC (not the American one, US type people) didn’t buy off the BBC …. how odd. Thanks for sharing Warzan.
hahaha that’s funny … and no I am not over 57
I concur, I get and I too am NOT over 57 😉
Mr Ben-diagram, PMSL love it
LOL
And as if by magic ……..
I think TV Ben would actually look quite dashing in a bowler hat.
Or a character from Clockwork Orange
Well he is prone to a bit of the old ultra-violence
Jackhammer style apparently 😉
A furious and sexy hat
Love it 😀 .
Wowza

I’m sure Looby Loo and Teddy and the Pogles Wood gang would have your back if it came to a bit of set to
I’m bringing Hartly Hare to this brawl
Nah – they’re way too hard core for me Mate – I’ll stick to asking the softer Mafia and the Krays for backup…
Not over 57 but remember watching this on TV a little while ago now.
Haha!
(and I just hit 40 and get it :p )
Lol or actually that might have been a groan, where’s the shopkeeper when you need him. (not over 57!)

Useless fact: The first episodes of Captain Pugwash were performed live on TV
So *eh*
Anyone care to explain what references us non UK / young ones wouldn’t grok ?
Yeah like limburger …. I get the Venn Diagram reference and the furious and sexy bit but not the character reference… ah well

This is true it’s like Fawlty Towers in that sense, not many episodes but it felt like there were loads!
As toddler this was my favourite show by far 🙂
Did you not have button moon?
YES! I actually bought that a few years back to watch with Savanna 🙂

Good old Mr Benn. And at 37, does that make me an old fart before my time? Probably!
But Ben in a red thong? Shudder!
I remember Mr Benn quite well and I’m only 44.
