A Look Inside The Iron Kingdoms Unleashed Adventurers Kit!
November 21, 2014 by brennon
Privateer Press released information on the Iron Kingdoms Unleashed Adventurers Kit which is a great starting point for role-playing adventuring in the lands of Immoren and the untamed wilds to the west. Well, now we get a look inside the box!
We'll kick things off with what's exactly in this awesome boxed set...
- Rulebook
- Scenario Guide
- 4 Pregenerated Characters
- 14 Plastic Miniatures
- 9 Double-Sided Map Tiles
- 4 Sheets Of Tokens
- Dice
- Ruler
...so that's a pretty good start when you're thinking about getting into a role-playing game. Pretty much everything you could have needed when running the adventure has been thought of.
First up are the books. The books break down into the Rulebook that has everything you need to play the game and then of course the Scenario Book that will be in the hands of the Games Master so he or she can run the adventure and keep your heroes guessing. The Rulebook contains additional information for advancing your heroes and of course when it comes to the full release of the game you'll be able to take the characters onwards.
The Scenario Book contains a neat adventure called Hogwash that will be made for the four heroes that you get in the set and now seems a good point to talk about them!
Instead of just being one sheet cut and paste heroes the actual character booklets will include everything you'd want to know about your hero. As well as the important stats and such you'll also find information on their motivations, relationships and mannerisms too so you can get immersed in the world a bit more.
Alongside their character sheets they also get some neat looking miniatures AND the enemies get them too. They look really nice and it's great to see that they didn't just go with tokens or cardboard standees instead. I can see Hordes players wanting to pick these up for their own factions too.
Last but not least are the map tiles that you'll be using alongside the tokens. There's no word on how sturdy these components are within the box but I would imagine if they come with a selection of pop out tokens that they're going to be made of some kind of card stock material.
Unleashed is looking like a neat stepping stone into the world of Iron Kingdoms role-playing!

This set looks pretty good!
Oh sweet! I will totally be picking this up.
..although this does remind me that I need to finish writing up my own IKRPG introductory adventure.
Also I think it’s great that they have custom sculpts for the four PCs. I wonder if they will do that for the Black River Irregulars as well?
I hope so. Actually boxes of plastic characters and pregen sheets for them would be great, because it would be a great way of buying lots of characters for use and for conversion.
Unless I’m missing something here, privateer press plastic = restic. rubbish, have sworn off the stuff so I won’t be touching this set sadly
If it’s like the material you get in the Starter Boxes for Warmachine & Hordes then I reckon it would be alright. It seems like a different quality of material to me. If it’s like their standard restic stuff then yes I agree – not a big fan.

My guess is these will be pre-assembled plastics of the kind you get in boardgames like Super Dungeon Explore or Mars Attacks.
Um, dude? It is the same PVC plastic- they’ve just gotten better at casting it over time.
I’ve got a bunch of plastic bane thralls and some plastic deathrippers on my table right now, and they went together like a charm.
I get that everyone has gotten one of their kits where the flash was crazy to clean off, but they’ve improved it. They aren’t using different plastic recipes for their starters and unit boxes.
The new battlewagon for Convergence is actually the “good” plastic (like GW uses), so here’s hoping this will be using that plastic as well.
No it isn’t. At least it isn’t the same as what I’m talking about. The plastic is softer than “resitc”.
is it available over here yet? I would not mine this on my xmas list
That looks great. Good way to pick up IK RPG.
Thats what I was waiting for. A starter set for the Iron Kingdoms RPG with minis. :))
This is not an RPG its some kinda Descent game instead. Its a Tactical Strategy boardgame. I hate the time when Wizards introduced the 4th edition D&D. Since then every company wants to sell boardgames introduced as RPGs. If you want to play RPG look for REAL RPGs like Call of Cthulhu or some ‘eavy stuff like WARHAMMER 2nd edition.
Okay the miniatures are cool and the design too beside of those everything is about killing, killing and killing.
No, I don’t think this is a Boardgame.
Its the new upcoming Iron Kingdom RPG in the Hordes Universe. Iron Kingdom: Unleashed.
On the Back on the cover states Roleplaying Game Adventure Kit. So I thing this is a Starter for the RPG.
Not really. The *combat* is about killing, killing, killing. And since PP are a miniatures company and the game borrows a lot from the Warmahodes system, they decided that when it comes to putting an axe in somebody’s face, their potential player base would probably prefer a more visual (e.g. using miniatures) combat system than the theatre of the mind although that is still very much an option. So this box includes a battle map and miniatures for the same reason the Pathfinder beginner box includes a battle map and miniature pawns.
I’m kinda confused. So, am I right if I say that this is a boardgame that use IKRPG rules?
No, it’s the starter kit for for the IKRPG – pregenerated characters, adventure book, quickstart rules and a location map that you can use for the combat encounter(s) in the game. This is pretty much the same as the Pathfinder or D&D 5E beginners box only this game includes the miniatures too (instead of card pawns) because:
A) The IKRPG has a heavier focus on using minis in combat than a lot of RPGs.
B) Minis are what PP does!
I suspect you have not cracked open the IKRPG book. It is NOT what you are saying it is. Combat is highly simplified compared to many other RPGs, and is frankly not that detailed and does not take up much of the book. It, and all the supplements that appear in No Quarter, are very, very fluff and background-heavy. The stats take up very little space at all and combat is simply not that detailed. Remember, IK began as an RPG setting for D&D 3.x, NOT as a wargame. (Or maybe you didn’t know that.) Yes, PP takes advantage of… Read more »
Before I dig out my dog-eared copies of the 3rd ed Witchfire Trilogy books and wave them around in the air, I should probably check to see if you were adressing me or Sersei with that comment 😉
