Can we please get some nice suggestions for what this would really be used for?
Limited to half polygons and the costs of your various molds, clays, miliputs, greenstuffs.
Shields, shoulder pads, bases…
Would it work if you used a layer of foil or cling film so that you could mold both sides of an item at once? Because that opens you up to replicating anything you’ve ever seen modeled. Must be plenty of legal issues to hide from though 😛
if you look at thier website or utube channel in shows him making a copy of a sword(i dont like his way of making a both sides mold). i do mine differantly i press whatever im copying into a piece of instantmold let it cool then put the next bit of instantmold on top off it and let it cool that way theres no cutting i put the link for their video below. also theres a much cheaper stuff on the internet think its called crazy plastic(also has a crazy japenese name)which is the same stuff but mostly coloured and… Read more »
You can see through Oyumaru, it is coloured but it is still transparent.
Not that you actually actually need to be able to see through a mould anyway.
Sort of a grey area here is that dependent on the country you’re in copying bits not designed by you may be fully legal for personal use (most of the EU) or fully illegal independent of use (UK and USA).

hers a demo of the japenese stuff from a great girl.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U51nGovK5_s
the above is the japenese stuff called oyumaru with a demo from a great scottish girl
The videos you’ve posted show the easiest use of Oyumaru, making simple 1 sided press moulds.
This one shows slightly more advanced 2-part moulds…infact as far as I know there isn’t anything stopping you using Oyumaru exactly as you would use a silicon mould just without the mess of using a liquid. The only possible issue would be that as it reacts to heat very fast drying resin may cause the mould to heat up and lose detail, regular liquid resin should probably be fine though.

w00t just ordered some!
her numa numa parody got pretty embarrassing
ive seen a lot of talk about this stuff and oyumaru on 4chan /tg/. people have been experimenting with it to get the best results and finding out what it can and cannot do. big things, it cant or doesnt do well full 2 part molds of miniatures. its fine for copying a gun or sword in a 2 part mold, but when you start attempting a full miniature, thats when things break down. what it does great is stuff youve seen, like copying shoulderpads or making unique bases etc. but my favorite thing ive seen so far is it… Read more »
theres a problem in using some resins. as the resin makes heat to set(cure) which in turn makes the mold melt
yeah and i followed a thread specifically studying that issue. when it comes to textured bases, there really isnt a problem, but if its something more elaborate, then issues arise
Yeah it is all about finding the right material for the job.
“Greenstuff”/ or any 2-part putty isn’t perfect but will do the job, especially in push moulds where you can really jam it in and get the most pressure on it.
A liquid medium would get more detail out of it.
If used carefully and with a the right type of liquid medium I don’t see 2-part push moulds being a problem and even full on vented “one piece” moulds would be possible.
I ordered my InstantMold from Cool Mini or Not this past Monday and got it on Wednesday, which surprised me. I’m planning on using it to mold embellishments for terrain (all buildings must be covered in skulls) and maybe to add greenstuff embellishments to a CSM Rhino I’m building. I’ll probably do a video tutorial at some point.

Now that would be a tutorial I would like to see! Tutorials from the manufacturer is always a bit of a gamble.
Instamold is just a brand name for Oyumaru putty. You pay twice the price for half as much if you buy it from cool mini or not, purchase it from else where and don’t support being ripped off.
Couldn’t agree more.
They will be importing uncoloured sticks of Oyumaru from Japan or China in bulk for next to nothing, putting it in a different packet and selling it for close to twice the price.
I don’t know if I’d go as far as saying twice for half as much…I’ll go looking for some UK suppliers and post what I find.
The packs have 3 stripes, I bought some to review for my site 2 weeks ago and got 6 sticks for almost exactly half the price on Ebay.
i found 6 sticks of oyumaru in Australia for $8.50 AUD

much cheaper than ordering from coolmini, so glad someone pointed it out here.
My post with some links for UK suppliers seems to be needing moderation, I guess cause it has over a certain number of links in it. but the basics are –
7 Sticks for £4.95 from metalclay.co.uk
6 Sticks from Amazon £4.90
24 sticks also from Amazon for £19. (not much of a saving from the bulk buy there)
The cheapest I’ve found sofar is £3.85 for 7 sticks from creativeglassshop.co.uk.
Of course these places could all have very different delivery charges so just cause that last one has the cheapest base price doesn’t mean it’ll be the cheapest overall.
As far as legality goes, I beleive that if you are able to burn DVD’s then you are able to mould your own miniatures for personal use. There is a white dwarf that even gives instructions on how to do mould making, However don’t get caught selling re-casts on Ebay. lol. I think that someone will cotton on to you selling a golden deamon every week. When I enquired to GW about this topic the vibe I got was have fun with the hobby.
There are numerous uk suppliers.

The cheapest I’ve found after five minutes on google is £3.85 for 7 sticks.

Though naturally these prices don’t take into deliver costs so some might work out cheaper in the long run.
Certainly though cool-mini are overcharging for the stuff by at least 50% simply for sticking their own brand name on it.
Looks like this was discussed on Tabletop Gaming News. Oyumaru should be avalible at your local hobby shop. Although it could be under a nother name.
