Dark Age Warriors & Aethelstan Fight On With Footsore
August 27, 2015 by brennon
Footsore Miniatures have three new releases for your Dark Age warbands. The first of these is the mighty Aethelstan who is regarded as being the first King of England...
Warrior King
Aethelstan was one hell of a general. He managed to conquer the Scots and pushed the Vikings out of England. Even though he wasn't able to hold York indefinitely he still dealt them a heavy blow and was well regarded across Britain and Europe.
The model pack comes with Aethelstan holding his spear aloft and a Bannerman flying his colours. I love that ruined shield transfer (looks like a transfer?) the Bannerman has too, a great addition. If you put these two on a larger base and gave him a few more retainers you'd have an ace Warlord.
Warrior Priest
From fighting Kings to a fighting Priest instead. See what you think of the Christian Warrior Priest who has probably seen far too many of his own monastic buildings burned to the ground and is looking for a bit of vengeance.
I think that he would be great leading a bunch of angry monks into battle during a scenario where Vikings are raiding looking for plunder.
Shieldwall Supporters
You also always need more men for the shieldwall and that's where the Late Saxon Thegns come in. These soldiers are more heavily armed and armoured than the peasants of the land who would be called to fight.
Well trained and loyal to their Lords these soldiers would have been front and centre in the shieldwall ready to repel the enemy with spears bristling out in front.
What will you be picking up?

Uuuu I like the warrior priest. He is so much Kingdom of Heaven!
I am probably wrong but weren’t priests only meant to use blunt weapons? Not sure if this was the rule in both the Celtic and Roman Church, but by the time of Aethelstan I would bet the Roman church was dominant in Britain
Hopefully someone has the info about this
There was a good book on it by Katherine Smith called War and the Making of Medieval Monastic Culture. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe that the Council of Charroux at the end of Xth Century Issued something more or less of an anathema against clergymen bearing arms and a sword was listed there for sure. I don’t have the book here in Szczecin, but I am going to visit my family home tomorrow and I can check it up for you @torros
Would be great thank you
Ok so I found the passage I have been referring to earlier @torros “the Council of Charroux’s pronouncement of anathema against ‘any priest, deacon, or other member of the clergy bearing arms, that is, a shield, sword, hauberk or helmet’, suggests a high level of anxiety about physical contact with the military equipment…”
Very nice. I haven’t started collecting this type of miniature yet but when I do (oh it will happen) these will definitely be in my sights.
Those are rather nice.
All hail Footsore Miniatures!
